Majestic: Happy Birthday, Kendra.

For those of you who got far enough into Majestic to find Kendra's amazon wishlist -- and who are so lazy as to not have removed it from your amazon friends list yet -- you might have noticed that last Thursday, March 13, was her birthday.

On a whim, I sent Kendra an e-card (and cc'd one of the PMs). I thought I'd pass on the reply.

Hi 'Muda!

Thanks for remembering Kendra's b-day Smile Ah, Kendra,
we hardly knew ye.

The Scamorama piece was hilarious -- thanks so much
for sending the link. I'm forwarding it to a lot of
the old Majestic crew Smile

I'm not sure if I told you what I'm up to now -- I'm a
designer at There (www.there.com), a new online
social/play space. We're a couple of months into our
public beta: if you're interested (our site has
screenshots and press links), please do sign up Smile

Hope all is well with you--

The link she mentions, Scamorama, is a piece of humor I discovered while trying to locate Kendra's email for the card. It's a collection of Nigerian 419 Scam baiting, and this particular exchange used names & contact information from Majestic (in character, no less) to keep the scammer busy for almost a month.

An entertaining read, and you can see what Kendra is up to these days!

speaking of Majestic

I was playing it and even though it had it's problems I had every intention of finishing it. I hate to leave a game unfinished. Right near the end when they had announced that the game was going to end I had switched credit cards, so my Majestic account got dropped. Long story short I missed the end. Does anyone know of a guide/synopsis online anywhere? Or can someone fill me in?

Missing Majestic

I wonder if the someone would ever give this another try to the level of Majestic. If Sept 11 never happened and the game didn't get suspended, who know how the ARG world would of turned out. MAybe majestic would of been a bigger success.

Hi guys. I hope that someone will someday back a game as big as Majestic again, or at least as big as Majestic could've been. They didn't follow through as much as a lot of us pre-launch people hoped, but it was still a great start to making a fully immersive ARG.

In the meantime, I'm trying my hand at Aware and Zyzygy. Gotta take what we can get. Smile

Hi Yliandra! Now, I don't know if this game is going to be any good or not, but see this thread for a Majestic-type game that is due out in the U.S.

I'll probably play just to try it out and give it a review.

Majestic was having problems even before 9/11. The puzzles were too easy, the plot too non-interactive, and the episodes too short. Customer dissatisfaction was high, and EA didn't seem to care. It's very doubtful that 9/11 did anything more than accelerate Majestic's demise, especially since most Majestic players were done with that month's episode before that day.

In my opinion, 9/11 was just a convenient excuse for them to pull the plug.

I was a Virgin

You see, Majestic was my first. I believe an ARG is always best the first time.

Do you remember the movie "The Game"? Everyone was like, "is this your first?" "Your first is always your best."

Just remember that everytime you meet a newbie. You help make the experince better by remaining positive.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I really, really enjoyed Majestic, dispite all of its problems. Very innovative stuff, a little too linear for me, but they really gave it a good shot.

I think they were the first to bump up against the hard realization that subscription based games of this sort just can't generate the number of players needed to be viable. Everyone points at Everquest as proof of concept, but I really think this is apples and oranges.

To the startup subscription-based ARGs, we salute you:

Very Happy

Oh, and Kendra was hot.

Good point Nash. Smile

Majestic was my first too. Did you finish the game? I never have been able to find anyone who can tell me what happened in the end.

I finished, stayed to the bitter end.

Funny thing is, I don't really remember how it ended. All I remember is that Joe Pantoliano showed up, we all went "ooooooh, Joe Pantoliano!" and then that was it. Laughing

I stayed till the end.

I was a Beta Wave 2... Loved the Game despite its down falls..

What happned was Joe played a reporter, he was supposed to meet someone to pass on some info, but never showed up...

He disappeared and know one knows what happened to him.

and thats when they pulled the plug and left you hanging..

that's it? They left you hanging? That sucks. I think I remember seeing a video from Joe and then I stopped playing. I guess I didn't miss much.

Agreed

The end was very bad. But for a few days, I was pleased with it. It left me with more questions. I thought to myself, "Does this mean a sequel?" Then read stuff that Majestic cost EA a bunch of money, and likely wouldn't be done again. Most thought of it as game before it's time, or interesting way to tell a story not worth telling.
