What kind of demographic are they after, exactly? We've got plenty of horny young men already Wink

....

Ahem.

I'm pleased to be able to relate that once more, Perplex City has made it into the hallowed pages of PC Zone this month. No linky or scans (copyright protection, etc, etc.) but it's the edition which came out Saturday (24th) and features a full, glossy two page spread, entitled "Reality Bytes".

Excerpts include:

Quote:
"People compare alternate reality gaming and its passionate online communities to MMOG's like World of Warcraft or Second Life." says Michael Smith, svengali behind the greatest mind-scrambler of them all, Perplex City. At the heart of Smith's fictional metropolis, hidden via clues on collectable cards, is a very real prize: a cube worth 100,000, stashed somewhere on the globe.

"We've created dozens of different websites and podcasts. We've used mobile phone technology, hidden stuff in cinema adverts, geocashes (GPS treasure hunts), trailed banners behind airplanes flying over cities... There's a massive amount of different ways in which we can disseminate information."

Quote:
In February 2006, over 200 AR gamers took part in a high-tech Perplex City scavenger hunt around London.

Quote:
Alternate reality gaming isn't about to go away, contends Michael Smith: "We're keen to take Perplex City into new platforms - TV and film are obvious ones. When the cube is found, then we move onto Season Two, where a whole new mystery and series of adventures awaits. I'd like Perplex City to run for decades.

The remainder of the article touches on a substantial number of past ARGs - ILB, Art of the Heist, Majestic, The Beast, Last Call Poker and The Lost Experience. It's a good, accurate overview piece, and it seems that PC Zone do rather like us Smile

J

P.S. Nothing mind blowingly new to report from the article, but the mention once more of geocashes (which I thought was geocaches) makes me think that there was definitely *something* that we didn't find at Jones Beach, NY...

If perplex city did run for decades, it would cost a fortune to buy all of the cards

But a fortune/decades=small fortune per decade, so that's OK.

And we have to very carefully break up the total cost so our ears don't bleed at how much we've all spent on the damned things. Wink

PXC was featured in a whopping 5 page article in the Escapist, and it even mentions some of you lucky ducks by name!

Read it here!

I'm willing to volunteer for this. There will be cookies right? I'm assuming also that there'll be a fully functional laptop, with internet access too...it's, just, well...traditional...

P.S. A good article for the game - ...and I thought that I'd managed to finally forget all about V's little note to us...think that I'll double check under the bed tonight. Juuuust in case. Shocked

Another review, albeit an old one (I think) - I haven't been able to find any previous reference to it. It's from a site called "Shiny Shiny: A girl's guide to gadgets" - and it's here

Direct links to the entire article as it appears in the magazine for PC Zone here and here.

Also, one from New Type - here

P.S. Anyone with a hankering after a Nintendo DS Lite, might want to look at Game.co.uk...they are not only giving away free card packs with every order, they now have the V2 Starter Pack available as part of a DS bundle.

In that Escapist article, I found this bit really interesting:

Quote:
I pressed for an example, picturing an ARG designer stalking around like a method actor, in character all the time and very creepy. "Well," she paused before continuing. "I think I'm allowed to say this. In that Monica arc, the reason she died is because the players set up a meeting between her and another character, Sylvia. Sylvia's husband had recently been killed, presumably because he'd found out a little too much about these bad guys. And I was writing Sylvia, this woman who had lost her husband. So I kind of put myself in her place, and all of this unrestrained grief just kind of poured out. It's the kind of thing that can be both in character and kind of embarrassing all at once. And I found myself really ... blue ... all the time that I was writing on her. Once you get yourself that down to do the work, it's hard to snap right back up again, I suppose."

Edit: Egads. I'm sinking that low for laughs...it really is too hot...
