If you're new to ARGs, start here!

Welcome to ARGing, and to Unfiction! Many of us here have lots of experience, but if this is your first immersive ARG, you may feel like a fish out of water. Don't feel lost; we know it can be a bit overwhelming at first. I mean, this game (Chasing the Wish), seems a lot like an onion...the more you strip away, the more you seem to reveal!

So where should you start? Go back and read the original email that kicked off the game. Dale tells us what our objectives are. He tells us of the journal, and he tells us that we need to access his email.

In the paragraph about the journal, he mentions, in some very interesting verbage, about not being able to "see the forest for the trees." Well, where have we seen a forest and trees in the game? Aha! The slider puzzle!

In this PM's typical fashion, do we get the journal unlocked by completing the slider? Hell no! That's just the start of this puzzle! Read the SOLVED post for the gory details! (And think back to the wordsearch that wasn't a wordsearch at all, which we saw in the miniquest!)

As far as email access, that has been cracked as well! http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=659

Dale also gives us a starting point in his letter...a single URL... www.synthasia.com. Begin there, read and click everything. As new websites open, bookmark them. I prefer to completely explore the first site before I begin the process again with subsequent sites. Helps me keep it all organized in my mind. Oh, and the name of the URL...let's not forget that Dale has a fondness for Asian culture!

Don't let the overwhelming amount of information freak you out. Dont rush through the game. Go slowly, take in all of the clues, and it'll begin to make sense...promise...even if it comes together via the hindsight of someone explaining it to you.

Hang in there!

Also you can learn some of the basics to solving puzzles here. (Alas nothing there to help with base codes, but other stuff that might come in handy at some point.)

This might help people some too. It's a walk-through on how the slider picture was solved and what the solution provided.

Tips

Here are some tips I wrote prior to CTW beginning. I thought they were worthy of repeating for those who may have missed or forgotten them.

Quote:
Try to get inside the PM's head. The way many serial murder cases are solved is through profiling. The same principle can be applied to ARGs. Read all you can about the PM (such as interviews). Find out what a PM's interests are, as these topics are likely to be introduced into the game in some fashion. People often write about what they know.

If you come up with some spec, try to fit it into the general plot or current storyline of the game. If you feel like you're reaching to get 2+2 to equal 4, you probably are. No harm in bouncing it off others though to see if anything sticks. However, most solves are pretty logical...even if in hindsight only!

If you do have some good-sounding spec, try to back it up. Look for some information to support your position, be it in the story itself or garnered from research available on the 'net. Try to make sure your source is reputable, and not just someone else's conjecture, whenever possible. If your conclusions are not based on common knowlegde, try to credit your source so others can evaluate your facts.

The only way to gain experience in this genre is to play ARGs, but they're awfully difficult if you have no experience. To combat this Catch-22, Unfiction is very helpful. Some other boards/sites are filled with newbies, which is fine, but they won't do much to help you learn the ways of thinking and attain the skill set needed to beat these games. There are good minds here!

Lastly, rarely is anything just "pretty". If it's there, it's probably there for a reason!

Regarding illusivetruth.com

One question that keeps coming up repeatedly is -- Is illusivetruth.com in game?

Although it's been addressed on this board in other areas, see http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=4110&highlight=#4110, it bears repeating, especially for those that are not familiar with previous ARGs. The simple answer is no, with one exception that we've seen, so far. The site is being used to host some streaming media relevant to Chasing the Wish.

The rest of the site relates to a previous game run by the same person who's bringing us CTW. I can't stress how important it is to do your homework on the Puppetmaster. This is just one example of the dividends of research!
