A NEW JOB CALLED “RESEARCH”

New entry at FAPT LPI
Quote:
NOW YOU’RE LEARNING HOW HARD IT IS TO GET BY WITH JUST YOURSELF TO RELY ON. WHICH IS WHY I STILL WANT YOU TO COME DOWN HERE, SO WE CAN SURVIVE TOGETHER.

I’VE CHANGED THE SIM AGAIN. THIS TIME I’VE ADDED SOMETHING. YOU’LL HAVE MORE THAN JUST BASIC SUPPLIES DOWN THERE. YOU’LL ALSO HAVE A LIBRARY OF INFORMATION – BOOKS, GUIDES, AND RESOURCES ON HOW THINGS WORK. CHEMISTRY, ENGINEERING, CONSTRUCTION. AND WITH ALL THE TIME YOU’LL HAVE TO FILL, I REALIZED THAT THE SIM WASN’T GIVING YOU A CHANCE TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO IMPROVE.

SO NOW, YOU’LL FIND A NEW JOB CALLED “RESEARCH” THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO EXTEND YOUR SUPPLIES.

I KNOW YOU’RE SMART, RADIOGIRL. BEING SMART IS GOING TO BE A KEY TO SURVIVING.

LOVE,

DAD

All the time we'll have to fill?
Even on the slowest setting, I can't help but to pause the SIM to think about what to do next.
Siiiggghh, ok, another variable.

It does throw a wrench in the works for the current high scorers. This changes "ideal" supply configs & possibly gives us room for 3 years.

And a bunch more MATH to recalculate everything.

RESEARCH does give you some bonuses, reducing FOOD consumption and Maximising FUEL, so I think it's a good addition, even though it takes a long time.

Research Effects on Supply Durations

**FILTER EFFECT:**
Quote:
You discovered a way to manually clean used air filters so they can be reused.
Research Finding Effects
Air filter last longer
    • Old rate of use = 1/179.99 days = 100%/179.99 = 0.555586421%/day
    • Boosted rate = 1% drop over ~ 3.5 days = 0.285714285%/day
    • 0.555586421%/ 0.285714285% = 1.94 -- **Filters should last 1.94 x as long (this may actually be 2x if new rate is closer to 1%/3.6 days)**

    • Which is 349.1806 - 359.98 days per filter (without extra failure days)
    • Or 384.1806 - 384.98 days per filter (with extra failure days)
So over a YEAR per Filter - which would mean with some luck, we could get by with buying 1, even with 2 (to be on the safe side) this gives us MUCH more room on Food/Water for 2 people / 2 years. (Something like 1762 - 1780 FOOD & 5936 - 5874 WATER, though I can be more exact once we have numbers for all the other effect boosts.

**FUEL EFFECT:**
Quote:
According to your research, not heating water for showers will save hugely on fuel.
Research finding effects
Generator consume less fuel
    • Old rate of use = 6 gal/day
    • Boosted rate = 3 gal/day (without extra failure days)
    • Or -- **2.830189 gal/day** (with the extra 20 failure days)

**FISH EFFECT:**
Quote:
You can safely skip feeding the fish once a day every three days.
Research finding effects
Fish supplies last longer
    • Old rate of use = 1 box = 4 days (0.25/day)
    • Boosted rate = 1 box = 8 days (without extra failure days)
    • Or -- **1 box = 8.8 days (0.1136/day)** (with the extra 20 failure days)

I'll recalculate some supply lists using this information and try to post them later. If anyone wants to try on their own -- a reasonable way to start (for 2 people x 2 years) would be to purchase 2 FILTERS and then calculate FUEL & FISH by using a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio between Old / New rates. Or to use Old rates for 270-300 days (to be safe) and New rates for the remaining 430 days. You could put everything else into Food & Water and possibly go back to 8-10 kits.

EDIT: TheMagicJesus made it to 1013 days, starting with 2 people!!! So we're creeping up on the 3 year mark - 82 days to go.

I didn't capture it but there's a FOOD effect. Something like:

RESEARCH shows that eating smaller meals more often lowers overall food consumption.

Plus I ran into RESEARCH didn't turn up any useful information.
So, sometimes you get a dud.

Okay, I played through once, and I noticed that once each character has three findings with research, they come up with nothing after that, no matter how many times you play. I was playing with two characters, so I had 6 findings total. Maybe with three, you could get more.

My first research event said:

Quote:
The books say that even just 7 minutes of light physical activity every day can improve long-term survival chances.

Effects slower rate of health decay

Second research finding:
Quote:
Your research says if you eat more frequent, smaller meals you'll eat less food overall that [sic] fewer, larger meals

Effect: Inhabitants consume less food.

Third finding:

Quote:
Awarding gold stars or other prizes for successfully completing tasks will make people more invested in completing tasks.

Effect: Jobs don't decrease morale.

Fourth finding:

Quote:
You found a way to convert wastewater into safely drinkable water.

Effect: Inhabitants will utilize less water
