Yeah, same for me. A quick Google search for "soviet spy jailed 365 years" turns up this article:

http://articles.latimes.com/1986-08-29/news/mn-14560_1_150-year-sentence

Quote:
Whitworth Given 365-Year Sentence : Castigated by Judge, Spy Also Is Fined $410,000; Penalty Harshest Since '53

August 29, 1986|DAN MORAIN | Times Staff Writer

SAN FRANCISCO Calling Jerry A. Whitworth "one of the most spectacular spies of this century," a federal judge Thursday sentenced the former U.S. Navy communication specialist to 365 years in prison and fined him $410,000.

U.S. District Judge John P. Vukasin also ordered that Whitworth, 47, who stole Navy coding secrets for sale to the Soviet Union, serve 60 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

Very interesting. Perhaps we have a rough date for when Howard left the Navy?

EDIT: The Wikipedia article for Seasat also mentions a conspiracy theory:

Quote:
Seasat was able to detect the wakes of submerged submarines, a discovery not anticipated before launch. The conspiracy theory holds that once this was discovered, the military shut SEASAT down, with a cover story of a power supply short.

Satellite that Howard was working on could detect the wakes of submerged submarines. I assume that means it could also detect large underwater creatures, in that case.

What they found UP THERE was bigger. Aliens this time? There's a lot of space stuff in this ARG. Iy could just be me wanting it to tie Super 8 into this. Did we ever find out the name of the oil company Sarah worked for?

"little girls"? How does Howard expect someone he thinks of as a little girl to drive to him from Chicago? Again, you can see why people would think he was disconnected from reality.

The spy satellite link for Feb wasn't working for me- searched- http://www.space.com/31888-us-spy-satellite-dazzling-launch-nrol45.html

Extremely interesting how they are improvising with real time stories. Is this a nod to the satellite angle we started to use for the numbers?

What's interesting is I read a lot about this spy ring, specifically John Walker https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Anthony_Walker when I was searching for links between navy / radioman / and the Soviet Union as John was a communications specialist / radioman.

So they launched Seasat and it unexpectedly was able to track ocean wakes from submarines.. So they cancelled the program, turned off the satellite and used the excuse that there was a power failure.. Howie knows the truth tho and this seems to drive his paranoia..

So there is there SEASAT 1 satellite under "100 brightest" on the link, provided by Howard:

http://science.nasa.gov/iSat/?group=SMD

I cannot give the specific link, since my smartphone browser doesn't support WebGL.

Anyway, probably this is what we should observe.
Plus the weather link, where might me some patterns. In which connection?...

And spies use codes...which is why the misspelled words in each of Howards messages to Megan are still 'niggling' at me:

    1st: YORU - YOUR

    2nd: ---

    3rd: PROJETC - PROJECT
    ASKIGN - ASKING

    LPI Link: THIGNS - THINGS
    RESEPCT - RESPECT

It feels like it should mean...something.

Confused

*edited to 'un-correct' my correct spelling of 'things'...lol.

Did I miss a second misspelling of 'project', kosmopol?

So far, I'm coming up with this 'message', possibly...

YOUR ASKING THINGS - RESPECT PROJECT

Maybe there will be another 'misspelling' soon?

Question

Yep. The messages generally have good, appropriate grammar except for specific mistakes. Or are those red herrings by the PMs designed to keep us awake. Unfortunately, there's no way to know.

You right, I've read it twice, lol.

Anyway, I'll better open a new Grammar Trail, where we can analyse typos.

The thing that's strange is that he said, "WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE TRACKING SOVIET SPY SATELLITES BUT WHAT WE FOUND UP THERE WAS MUCH MUCH BIGGER."

Since he was looking for satellites, I assume the "bigger" thing "up there" was in space, or in the atmosphere of sorts. Yet, the entire conspiracy seems to be more revolved around the ocean, and it would fit in well with the Cloverfield monster.

I got this from the a NYTimes article from 1999:
"In 1978... the National Aeronautics and Space Administration launched a new kind of satellite that made images by bouncing radio waves off the planet.

Known as Seasat, this radar craft saw land and sea in striking new ways, its images revealing narrow lines in the ocean -- tracings left by the passage of ships and subs. It somehow managed to distinguish signs of deep turbulence from the regular froth and heave of the sea.

Seasat's feats came to an abrupt end in 1978 when the spacecraft failed unexpectedly after 100 days, with the Pentagon deeply ambivalent about its discoveries.

''There was concern about what we had done,'' recalled Gene Giberson, the project manager for Seasat at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif."

Incoming Retrospective
Strange enough, the trailer explicitly shows some kind of light and craft coming out of the roof of the house at the end. Whether it's some sort of device Howard built or an antagonistic entity, I have no idea, but I looked very closely with tools to enhance the picture, and there was something opening or rising in the trailer, I'm sure -- and this whole satellite thing is tying in with that now. I'm not sure what this movie is about, but the ARG is suggesting is suggesting possibly aliens, while the title of film and it's nature about "something's coming" promotes a hopeful return to the Cloverfield Monster, and the newest trailer could even suggest an almost zombie-apocalypse-like nature to the film. Honestly, I'm totally thrown off and a bit discouraged by all the strange angles.

Weirdness. It worked for me clicking from your link...speaking of which - did anyone else read the 'mini-bio' for the author of the article, by any chance...?

"Mike Wall, Space.com - Senior Writer

Michael was a science writer for the 'Idaho National Laboratory' and has been an intern at 'Wired.com', The 'Salinas Californian' newspaper, and the 'SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory'. He has also worked as a *herpetologist and wildlife biologist*. He has a Ph.D. in *evolutionary biology* [emphasises mine] from the University of Sydney, Australia, a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona, and a graduate certificate in science writing from the University of California, Santa Cruz."

Oh, that smells kind of like a 'Tagruato Project'...and we know how they like to 'play with DNA', don't we...?

Shocked

Correct me if I'm wrong...Howard Stambler has been with Bold Futura for 7 years...My current head canon is Howard was with the Navy right up until they discovered what was going down with Clover near the Chuai station (Im buying into the seasat satellite actually searching the sea not space). At that point he leaves/gets kicked out of the Navy (cause theyre not accepting whatever hes seeing) and picked up by Tagruato for all his military/satellite knowledge. This would be like immediately during/following the events of the first movie. Which would add up since he's been with the company 7 years. The whole thing about him knowing how to recognize a cover story could come from not only his experience in the Navy with this incident but also his experience constantly having to lie about what hes monitoring on the government satellites for Tagruato (which im assuming is the same satellite that cost him his Navy career).

is my timeline messed up? its 4am and I just spent like an hour catching up to everything here and on reddit so its all blurring together

FAPT Update / Satellite tracking from a selected location

Apologies for what's going to be a quick post - I'm short of time & can't post direct links b/c I'm on my phone (can't do WebGL). I'm posting here b/c it's relevant to this most recent FAPT update, though it's also relevant to the Numbers/coordinates thread.

There are websites that allow tracking of satellites from a selected location (on the ground). One example is
www.satview.org . You can click on "CHANGE" next to the location and enter a different reference location by Lat/Long coordinates. It will then tell you when the next predicted pass of a selected satellite will occur.

So the obvious next step would seem to be to use the coordinates from the 5 trailer images, but it's not clear which satellite(s) to use. It's also not clear what we would get from that except for dates/times of upcoming satellite passes.

The orbit of SEASAT/SeaSat 1 doesn't really come close to our coordinates (and while it remains in orbit, it's non-functional). NROL 45 (launch designation) is likely Topaz 4 (satellite), though I haven't had a chance to look at this orbit yet.

EDIT: Doubt this info has much to do with this ARG since SEASAT was only functional June 28 - October 10, 1978, but the SAR data is downloadable here: https://www.asf.alaska.edu/seasat/
