Who is Jay and why did his house burn down?

I never really had a problem with the idea that Jay has some sort of job that he uses to get the money for hotels, food, gas, etc. It wouldn't take much, and his problems seem to occur mostly when he's either totally alone or with only one or two people. I get the impression that neither Masky nor the Operator are going to come through the McDonald's drive through to bug him.
I don't think that willing suspension of disbelief would be good enough on its own, though. Willing suspension pretty much always comes with the caveat that you can get people to accept the impossible, but not the improbable. That's why people care more when an explosion makes noise in space than when you launch a rocket faster than light. That example doesn't ruin the show, but I do think that having no potential source for money would come out as a plot hole in MH.

Firstly, this is the only forum I've ever been on that has a problem with multiple threads.
I've never seen a forum quite so uptight about it, but then again, I've also never seen a forum that wasn't so annoying about its "hey let's make a new thread for every inane thought I have" tendencies. So, I guess it evens out.

Sure we believe that Alex killed someone and that people are being stalked by a faceless freak, so how hard is it to believe that Jay has money?
Man, I do hate this reasoning. In any work of fiction, particularly ones that are supposed to be a "realistic setting," you are asked to accept strange things as part of the plot, or occasionally for artistic expression. The Operator is one of those things. Jay's living expenses are not. Everything not in that category of "Acceptable Departure From Reality," you are expected to believe is possible.
So, Tim's "who gives a shit" is funny & all, but it doesn't actually answer the question. I think this thread does a nice job of that.

Is Jay a partner on Youtube? Because he might be getting a bit of money from YT too.

$20 a day? Where's this guy eating, the Ritz? He probably stretches his meagre budget more and more each week. That can't be good. It could be the case that Jay sleeps and runs at some of the places where you pay on checkout. After all, he only seems to stay one night a time for most of the time. ("I don't want to sleep in my car tonight" from Entry #42ish seems like one night in a bed punctuates night after night in his car.) What bugs me the most is his level of personal hygiene. He must be less than fresh most of the time and his clothes must be a biohazard by now.
Slightly less than totally boring: what about a small inheritance from a family death. You know, a slenderdeath.
ETA: "I don't want any hotels that are near to here" is consistent with sleep and run. But they probably have nothing to do with anything, just an amusing thought. And maybe that's what Jessica did. Maybe this whole thing is a frivolous scam to get free hotel rooms.

Well, Marble Hornets started being a partner after he left the Hotel he was in with Jessica, but I guess it could be some kind of retcon. Also, YouTube partners don't make very much money. Also, there's the question of whether or not Jay is actually a YouTube partner IG which there's really no way of knowing unless the writers say something about it. I imagine their answer would be similar to Tim's answer to the original question.

Perhaps many hotel bathrooms and a laundromat?

What you folks are forgetting about Jay's Extended Stay: A LOT of Hotels have a sort of "Weekly rate" for single occupancy rooms. It turns an almost $300 a week stay (at $40 a night) to around $170.

Doesn't Alex live out of his car too in Entry #52? It looks like he tent poles and a sleeping bag in there when Jay rummages around his front seats.

Knowing Jay he'd probably camp in the middle of Rosswood.

I'd assume he's still living in his apartment because he mentions the key to his apartment is missing in that entry where it's the continuation of that creepy story, and then the next day "entry 52", so I doubt he was living out of his car.

That definitely brings up some interesting implications for why he has camping gear in his car, although in all fairness the implications are probably not really very surprising at this point. He's either camping in Rosswood Park, or he's attempting to fight slenderman with a tent. One of the two.
I think that fighting slenderman with a tent is a good idea, myself.

I dunno, it might actually be a good idea. Slendy might be able to get away with appearing in a maintenance tunnel by going horizontal, but I'd like to see him fit inside a small tent.
The best defense since Spongebob's Anti-Sea-Bear Circle.

This is the only video I could find of it.
Best thing ever though.
Edit: I don't know how to make it not be stupid, so I'm leaving it here until and unless Zaarg or someone wants to fix it for me

I guess it depends on how much flexibility he has as to how tall he appears. At least in some of the stories, he can apparently get taller or shorter at will. There's always the potential for a really awkward slender-shrink that leaves him roughly the height of a small child and very rectangular in shape.
