Formatting for a evaluative paper on ARGs?

This is a very intersting discussion I had with my writing center, yet no one was able to give me a clear answer. Most of it is username-related.
I am writing an evaluative paper on an ARG, however I am having issues trying to figure out a few writing style/formatting things.

For one of the ARGs I am talkign about, we only know the "title" of one character, on the thread we simply call him DNC or donotcontinue. I figured that is decent as a placeholder for his name, because writing out "the person running the dononcontinue account" gets rather repetitive. I am also running into this issue with the name of the son running the primary ARG account, MyDadsTapes. We simply call him MDT, and the killer on the tapes the MDT-killer. Those are confusing as well.

On another ARG I am also discussing, I wanted to discuss certain events that happened to the players themselves as part of the interactive side of ARGs. I suppose their usernames would be sufficient, I don't want to be a creeper and ask them for their names. Also, would usernames be italicized because it is a title/new word or would it be left alone like any other name? Only the first time it's used it's italicized?

Thank you. I realize these are probably stupid questions, but my Writing Center isn't being very helpful at all.

I don't know anything about evaluative papers, if that's a specific format, but I have written some scientific papers that occasionally run into similar issues. My suggestion would be to put a paragraph in the beginning of the paper addressing your terminology, and stick to that convention for the rest of the paper.

As an example, for a paper I wrote about a robot I worked on, early in the paper I had a sentence along the lines of: "The configuration I just described will be referred to as 'Top Mode' for the remainder of this paper."

So in your case, put in a basic description of the donotcontinue account, and then say something like "to simplify terminology, the operator of the donotcontinue account will be referred to as DNC throughout the rest of this paper." And so on for other specific acronyms/nicknames.

Usernames should be fine, again maybe prefaced with "all participants are referred to by their forum usernames" to avoid confusion. I don't think italics are necessary, unless some of the usernames are words that might get confusing when used in a sentence.

Of course, your writing center/program might have specific requirements, so those should take precedence over random forum user's advice. Smile

Good luck with the paper!
