[OT] FLYNN LIVES: THEA Award Winner! As some of you may already know, FLYNN LIVES has received an award from the Themed Entertainment Association, for their 17th annual THEA awards (sort of the "theme park oscars"). The THEAs honor outstanding achievements in the creation of compelling experiences for theme parks, museums, events, and other themed entertainment endeavors. As the industry association for all the magic makers behind the world’s favorite places, activities, and happenings, the TEA uses the THEAS to honor some of the industry's leading achievements.

It's quite prestigious, and really shows how ARGs transcend their online origins to become real-world phenomenon and a source of real, tangible, and most importantly *social*, entertainment for players.
In addition to being a rabid FL player, I am a writer/designer in the themed-entertainment industry, and helped nominate the game for its award via some detailed presentations to the TEA board (but I didn't vote on its final win). Currently, I will be contributing to the THEA blog, and writing the program notes for the final award show held in Los Angeles this March.
Our first of a series of blog posts went up today:
http://theaawards.org/blog/2011/1/24/greetings-programs.html
Feel free to comment, both there and here -- I'm hoping that some of you will want to share your experiences on the blog, since this audience of designers is new to the ARG experience, and I'm very eager and excited to let them hear from the source just how compelling ARG storytelling can be.
We may also be doing some Q&A with some of the designers, so if you have any questions you'd like to throw into the ring, please leave them as comments here, or contact me directly. Can't guarantee any answers -- especially because all seems to be "not quite over" just yet? perhaps? -- but your input and opinions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Much deserved congratulations to 42Entertainment!!
Flynn Lives was an amazing experience for me as a Tron fan since '82 and I can only dream that it isn't quite over yet. So many moments during the ARG had me physically pinching myself as they seemed so unbelievably cool. And while I was unable to attend the SDCC or Wondercon live events due to my location and lack of funds, just knowing that they were taking place and living through them thanks to online coverage was simply breathtaking. And it was not only a life memory for myself, but a bonding experience with my young sons. Seeing the looks on their faces as Encom postcards arrived in the mail as rewards for their Circuit Cycle skills, explaining the history of video games as we hunted for the answers to the Arcade Aid pics, driving up to Kansas City as a family for Tron Night... words cannot express my gratitude for these gifts, but as I said back when we were told "Game Over" with a smile from Clu, "Thank You, 42Entertainment", is all I can say. Thank you, so much.

Congratulations and awesome work, 42E! I've loved Tron ever since I watched it on VHS back in the day and would've loved the movie without Flynn Lives. But with Flynn Lives, it has made Tron a real and tactile experience filled with adventure, fun and real friendships.
I also love that there are many things I personally love on the THEA awards list like the World of Color at Disney's California Adventure, The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, and the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
I can't wait for ZackAttack to contact us all again -- FLYNN LIVES!!

Thanks for posting all of this, it's a pleasure to read.
Even thought, as far as I was, I couldn't participate in all the stuff that happened, it was a thrill to see it unfold in real time.

THEA AWARDS PHOTOS & EXCLUSIVE Q&A WITH 42 ENTERTAINMENT The THEA awards were held last week on March 12th. It was a lively event, filled with great memories and incredible award-winning projects -- including FLYNN LIVES.
I had the honor of presenting the award to 42 Entertainment at the THEA ceremony and I've posted some pix from that evening on Flickr:

Also, as a final post for the THEA blog, I have an EXCLUSIVE interview with Susan Bonds & Alex Lieu of 42 Entertainment, about their process and philosophies that drove the design of FLYNN LIVES:

Enjoy, and feel free to pass the links along!

Nice interview Dave.
I am somewhat surprised that they didn't acknowledge one of the fundamental elements that's put them at the top of the heap; Their respect for the players.
They state that people are more willing to give out PII than they were 5 years ago and there's some truth in that. But, except for the truly immature, who will always be learning lessons about bad decisions along those lines, people are willing to get engaged and invest time in these things because the providers have made a concerted effort to make them safer and more rewarding.
There aren't many recreational outlets on the web I will share information with as freely I do with 42 Entertainment as they've earned a certain level of trust by being the professionals they are.
There are a lot of other companies that would like to be in the same place; But, just... can't (or won't). Consequently, we watch their stuff float on by; Giving them tertiary interest and never developing a level of trust that will allow them to do really cool things for us until, eventually, they lose interest in producing content.

Great point, and true of any entertainment creator/brand, really -- the more the audience trusts you, the more they'll follow you into uncharted territory. Even in one-way entertainment
