Is there a reason this isn't being talked about or did I just miss this in the thousands of back posts? I just saw it after checking the super 8 wiki and it says it is an update from today, or tomorrow from where I live.

Interesting! Especially with the estate sale angle... unless of course this is someone OG attempting to play into it. Seems too much of a match to be anything less than deliberate, either way.

The box under the hat (in this picture) is that of a Trumpet Case ... I used to own one!

I had one too. It looks a little bit shallow to be a trumpet case, but hard to tell from this angle. Definitely looks like an instrument case.

"Play the five tones." Very Happy

I think these hats (and the accompanying monkey pins) are probably common enough that it has a good chance of just being happenstance.
No evidence to back that up, just a gut feeling.
We've probably all seen this particular hat a dozen times before but just never paid any attention. Guarantee you'll notice it when you see it now! Wink

Yes, these items are all sitting on top of the the suitcase the pillbox hat is photographed on top off. So far I've found the following items that are tagged as "Estate Sale" on June 17th:

http://swv.craigslist.org/clo/1797837302.html

http://swv.craigslist.org/art/1797829742.html

http://swv.craigslist.org/atq/1797823131.html

http://swv.craigslist.org/clt/1797817109.html

http://swv.craigslist.org/atq/1797809591.html

As well as the pillbox hat "Repost":

Whether these have anything to do with this ARG, I'm not sure but I'm still digging. Seems pretty strange this rare hat shows up like this. Also, there seems to be some info on the board behind these items. Maybe more clues?

Calling the hat "rare" seems like quite an assumption.
You guys are acting like it's a one-of-a-kind (or practically), when nothing backs that up.
I suggest you guys are digging for clues in the wrong yard. Confused

At the very least, this CL posting tells us that the hat and pin were always together, and not just a random pin that someone threw onto a random hat. Totally confirmed now, which doubles our odds of finding where this hat came from. Now I was born in the late 80's, so I know nothing about the 70's, but usually when you stick a pin on something, doesn't it mean it signifies a special event? [EXAMPLE] An investment club donated a large amount to a zoo, so they issued out these hats with monkey pins, or something else that actually makes sense?

Also, how many others have tried to contact the person who's selling the hat? I want to, but I also don't want to bug the crap out of someone genuinely trying to sell a dead relative's closet collection.

Craigslist section is "Southern West Virginia", which is either area code 304 or 681, but neither is in service.

The area code to Davenport, Iowa is 563. That's not in service either.

ETA: Unless 708 *is* the area code, which puts it in Cook County, Illinois. Chicago, that is.

Doing a google search on "Hooklineandminker" brings me here:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/index.php/thread561007/thread561007/thread561083/thread561092/thread561241/thread562670/thread564385/thread564503/thread565464/thread566710/thread567274/pg1

It's a "UFO Conspiracy Board" where the name is registered as a User. Hmmm...

Also, I emailed Josh just to see if he's connected to the Viral for sure or not. Hopefully, he is. If not, I feel bad for bugging him...
