Haven't posted in this thread in some time, but thought I'd post my theory from Facebook here as well, see what you all think.

K, the other day I posted a theory on how The Observer might be able to alter his appearance when he appears on video, as a way to dick with Noah. I have a major theory now, and that is simply one part of it. Here goes.

The Collective's Plan: Isolation and the Forced Choice

(Real quick if you don't know, a forced choice in a magic act refers to a magician's trick of allowing their volunteer to apparently freely choose any card/cup/ball/whatever they want, when unbeknownst to them it wasn't their choice at all. I believe this is one of the origins of the phrase "Forcing your hand" as well.)

Okay. The Collective wants Noah to get the Nazi journal and bring it to the boardwalk, and according to an Observer answer on Formspring, "freewillisnecessary' or something like that. (Formspring will be referenced a lot in this theory, hope you keep up with it). Now why on Earth would Noah ever do any of that stuff out of his own free will, especially since abducting him and stuff doesn't seem to be convincing him. Maybe their original plot was to say "We're gonna fuck with you until you heed our demands". Plan A failed.

Plan B, the current plan: Isolate Noah, make him feel alone. He has said a lot that he has no friends, except Kevin, and no girlfriend, and he doesn't seem to care for this. He does at least have people he's connected to, if not his friends, necessarily. Such as Kevin, John, Kat, Sarah, Edward... Uh-oh.

Noah also mentioned a looong time ago on Formspring that Kevin was someone he considered a friend, maybe best friend given his lack of options, and that he planned to bring him to the boardwalk, even saying something as brave as "I'll protect him" once. Furthermore, Kevin was mentioned, though not by name, as early as My Grandfather Karl, as the friend who translated the German. So, it seems to me that among people Noah trusts, Kevin is no. 1. Or WAS.

And so The Observer launches his "isolation" plan. First, he starts messing with Kevin, and at some point (maybe even not yet, timey-wimey), Kevin makes at least one vlog, which Observer will later insert into the November 11th video, and in that same video, make his appearance match that of Kevin. Suddenly, the most trusted friend is possibly the antagonist in Noah's head.

Next, Valentine's Day. John is killed by a gunshot wound. Noah's gun? Kat is killed by a man in a ripped shirt. Uh-oh. Sarah is killed shortly after. At some point, the police are going to suspect Noah of being involved in all three deaths. It doesn't matter if this is circumstantial, suspicion is enough to make Noah paranoid enough.

These three deaths ALSO serve to make Noah withdraw more, and refuse to associate with anyone else, lest they get hurt or killed too. If he does get in touch with Edward, or even Sarah's family, betcha they die shortly after.

Noah is now completely alone, and the only one he regularly sees, Kevin, he doesn't trust. The Collective has successfully isolated him.

Noah has nothing left now but solving the mystery, and so he "decides" to get that journal, very soon. But did he decide that? No. Forced Move. The Collective left him with that as his ONLY move. He thinks it's free will, but it isn't. Plan B? Success.

I also just remembered that 'Forced Move' is also a chess term, and looked it up. From a glossary of chess:

Forced move
A move which is the only one which does not result in a serious disadvantage for the moving player. "Forced" can also be used to describe a sequence of moves for which the player has no viable alternative, e.g. "the forced win of a piece" or "a forced checkmate". In these cases the player cannot avoid the loss of a piece or checkmate, respectively.
