is this a recent development? and have you been using the unfiction java applet to connect? I know of at least one person who uses that for chat, and it suddenly stopped working for them this past week. Perhaps the Lopez IT group upgraded your java version while you weren't looking? Or it could just be bad luck that you've been trying to connect to one particular server (radiant, stardust, asteroid, etc) when it was down for maintenance which occured over this past week. That applet does have a pull-down with other servers to choose from.

I use the code from http://www.chat-solutions.org/chat/unfiction.html -- I copied the html to a local file so I could customize it for myself. Maybe you could play with the port variable (param name="port" value="6697")
