[ARG] Traces of Hope

This game is being run by the British Red Cross, and it's starting point (read: registration page) can be found at tracesofhope.com.

I'm not sure how long this game will last, given the write-up on the registration page:

Quote:
Vicious war in Northern Uganda has destroyed Joseph’s home and torn his family apart. He has one goal, to find out from the Red Cross if his mother is alive or dead.

Now he has arrived in the dangerous refugee camp they call Hopetown, he has 24 hours to track down the Red Cross messenger and he needs you to be his guide.

He has a satellite phone, you have the web – together you’ll make a great team. Time is running out; guide Joseph through sickness, fire and violence as together you follow his traces of hope.

Either way, this sounds like a game many people should play...

I did, too... But I haven't received anything from them.

Has anyone gotten a email response from registering?

Okay...

I just received my first email from Joseph:

Quote:
Subject: Joseph truckin in Uganda

Hello how are you? My name is Joseph, I am in Northern Uganda…I am
hitching a ride with this British journalist called Alan Hackston and
he has finally let me use his sat. phone. Actually he is asleep! Ha
ha. I am on my way to Hopetown now... See ya J.

This line was in the footer of the email:

Qsat BRC293 | 1449GMT 02##078777##909#

I haven't tried yet, but I believe that the numbers a the end could be the number to his sat phone.

A quick Google search for "Alan Hackston" turns up his blog:

http://alanhackston.blogspot.com/

And he even posts about Joseph, in relation to first aid training. Oddly enough he throws Joseph's name out as though we should know it...

So I'm guessing Alan is an IG character even though he's attributed to writing for Reuters ( a very real, OOG) news service....

ETA... Also, you can find Alan's LinkedIn Profile

In his profile he links to his "website" (really a flickr account) and this website that briefly profiles his new book, Traces of Hope.

Also... The company that provides Alan's satellite phone service is QuantumSat, which is IG.

Hey Wise One, great to have you join in...

I think I was editing my post when you chimed in about QuantumSat, so you probably didn't see that it is definitely a game-related website. Seeing as you're in the UK, I doubt you'll be calling Minnesota...

If no one else does so in the next little while, I'll place a call to Quantum and see if anything comes from it... Though I don't think we have a real, in-game reason to call Quantum at this point.

ETA:
@Klang.... Welcome to UF and to ARGs in general. I see you've already tried calling Quantum. Were you able to leave a voicemail message?

Just For Kicks...

I sent a reply to Jospeh's email:

Quote:
Hey Joseph,

I'm doing well, thanks.  How's everything with your home and family?  I hear
things can be rather rough where you live.

Don't wake Alan!  Hope you make it safely to Hopetown.

I'll post any response I get.

I also sent an email to Quantum's webmaster to let him/her know that most of the company's website links are dead. (Just a little in-game prodding on my part...).

In the error message on error.html is "Host: www.vastert.nl".

Which is a Squirrel Mail client.
Username/password?

Well, I haven't been here for a while, but I decided to jump back into ARGs in general, and since this just started out.

I got the exact same email message as of above, and of course digged up Hackston's flickr and Blog accounts, and the QuantumSat homepage

I'm pretty sure this has been noticed, but there is a PDF for the SLIK feature that Alan mentioned on his blog: http://quantumsat.com/datasat100_manual.pdf

Of course, its only two pages but perhaps in the future we're supposed to use SLIK to track them? I went ahead and sent an email to ariSPLATquantumsat.com, who is the person in charge of selling this to see if I can get a copy.

ALSO I actually called the phone # 651-201-4859 on the quantumsat.com homepage and got someone named Mark who actually is not related to the game at all,who in coincidence actually signed up to play recently.

That seems a bit of an ... improbable coincidence. Did he come across as surprised that you'd called him?

You may not have noticed but hovering over each email address shows at the bottom "mailto:name@emailaddress.com" which signifies that the emails are probably just there for show.

The book is fake as the publish date is 1st Jan, 2010.
He says he works for Reuters since it would appear that Reuters is in on the ARG since they have a pictured link to the ToH website on Alert Net. (www.alertnet.org)

Ha! It looks as if my (and probably other) gentle prodding about broken links on Quantum's website worked. Until now--when I just refreshed the homepage--the link for the pdf had a bad file name. Also the other page wasn't linked to error.html. In both cases I simply got an Apache 404 error...

So, it is possible that we'll be searching for a user/password combination.

And, yeah, I can't see any way that the phone number would lead you to one of the players...

Unless the person simply (and incorrectly) used that as a cover, i.e. he is a minor part of the PM team that was caught unawares.

Klang called earlier and got a Vmail system. If you're still lurking around, was the voice mail a "professional" (Quantum) one?

@ EnixH, it would be rather cool for us to have to use this system to track Joseph and Alan. We'll just have to see... Oh, welcome back.

@Olly the webmaster email did have the "webmaster" username... maybe it's the only real one at this time...

ETA... Olly, I stand corrected. Again, things have changed on the website recently--links to files and pages corrected/changed, emails changed from (seemingly) live addresses to name@...
