META: Labelling your posts

I want to get a feel of how the players feel about something - Posting Labels.

When I played The Beast and Lockjaw, we used post labelling religiously. What that does is it keeps things more organized and easier to follow for everyone playing, newbie or not. Labelling a post as SPECulation, for example, might eliminate four or five subsequent "Where are you getting this information?" posts.

I've altered the Cloudmaker-Moderated posting guidelines as a proposal to this part of Unforums. These only pertain to the Metacortechs boards, not the entire Unforums. If you vote in the poll, take it seriously -- some people are really for this procedure, while others are not.

If you have questions, feel free to ask them here, and I will answer them.

Here's a draft of the posting guidelines I'd like to see implemented can be seen at www.smirkbox.com/label.html . I borrowed liberally from the CM-MOD guidelines. Plagiarism, I know thee well.

Thanks for your consideration.

META: a couple of thoughts on the scheme

I have two comments to add:

1) I'm horribly forgetful. If this goes into action, might there be some sort of quick-reference link on the site (preferably next to the subject text field) to pull up that list?

2) Aside from loosely following the AI ARG from the background, this is my first ARG. Do newbee's typically know about or adhere to the labeling rules? I can see it quickly becoming one newbee post followed by ten etiquette posts.

Overall, I think it's a good idea. I'm just wondering how many people won't follow the scheme (either by not knowing or by accident).

Absolutely. I could even talk to board admins to see if that can be set up just for the metacortechs forums.

Ten etiquette posts shouldn't be needed. Usually, what happens is the mods deal with the mis-labelled (or un-labelled) post right away, and once enough people get into the practice, they are quick to help out newbies with the rules of labelling. You don't usually see ten posts in a row that say "label your posts or else!", in my experience.

Re: META: a couple of thoughts on the scheme

I've not seen this used before so it's difficult to know how well it would work. I suppose I should check out more forums.

I suppose it depends on the categories, but the only potential problem I can see is the work for the moderators and a clear understanding of what is meant by the various terms.

For example a poster might put "Has anyone considered that there might be a connection between..."

Some might see it as a question, some a speculation.

I would second BriEnigma's concerns about Newbies and Guests - particularly those that dive in with a shed load of questions, already covered. I understand that at times there is a lot to get through, but the majority seem to manage.

So If they're not gonna check previous posts, will they bother with a tag system?

In summary then, yes I think its a good Idea if it can be made to work as explained.

So far I really like the labels. With the speed that posts are going up it saves alot of time. I can skip over some of the off topic and trivia stuff and dive right into those 587 posts in the carelessly puzzle thread. Shocked

I think it's a good idea - it especially helps when you're searching for files. You can put in a term, see that it came up in a [SPEC] file, and realize it's not the thread you're looking for.

I have to admit, this threw off a bit when I entered the site, and couldn't find one of my threads. And then I saw that a couple of them had different names altogether.

Sorry, this is just complaining. Moving along. Nothing to see here.

Question - Re: META: Labelling your posts

By labelling posts, do you mean labelling in the subject line? i.e. Post subject: Question - Re: META: Labelling your posts

Aonther suggestion for players, as mentioned before by someone. Please if you are responding to anothers comments, please quote their comment so we know what you're talking about. Smile
