[BoL/SiD] WE ARE THE UMBRATI To be one with the dark, one must have the key EDIT - CHANGED TOPIC TO REMOVE 'TRAILHEAD' TAG SINCE IT'S NOT TRAILHEAD, PROBLEM SOLVED ON THIS END...
EDIT - Changed topic title to official name! 5/22/08
Okay, since there's mostly general chatting on the Dark/Light "trailhead" thread, and since Beacons of Light apparently have kicked off with the Lightbringer Society, and since I DID look through the last 17 pages of the trailhead thread and saw nothing but a continuation of the pastry wars, I decided to jump in with this find...
In the DL signup source where that quote is, I went looking for the origin. Someone posted some quote early on but it was glossed over and didn't seem to be the actual source anyway. If this already got mentioned it was in passing and glossed over in favor of the sugar rush so I wanted to add it for the Dark Side because it's relevant...and maybe can get 'our side' going (I defected even if they don't fix it!)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Left_Hand_of_Darkness
Apparently this is from a sci fi book published in 1969 by Ursula LeGuin and that particular quote is explained here:
http://www.greenmanreview.com/book/book_leguin_lefthand.html
Quote:
Definitions of masculinity and femininity are so ingrained in and vital to Genly and his culture that he cannot discuss them without oversimplification. Are women really softer? Did childrearing ever really make them less capable of higher learning? If not, then what is the difference? What is the relationship between the sexual body and the body politic? Genly knows that his reality is shaped by his background -- he says that he could perceive an individual's scrupulousness as "either housewifely or scientific," and understands that the term he chooses will reflect an ideology as well as a relationship to the subject. Words create reality, particularly words (or lack thereof) for abstracts like individuality, gender, power, faith.
In a religious chant from Karhide exemplifying the religion/philosophy of that nation,
Light is the left hand of darkness
and darkness the right hand of light.
Two are one, life and death, lying
together like lovers in kemmer,
like hands joined together,
like the end and the way..
I especially found this amusing
Quote:
For the first several pages of The Left Hand of Darkness, readers see the country of Karhide on the planet Gethen as a typical Western monarchy. Through the eye of Genly Ai (pronounced "I," like a cry), we witness all the traditional trappings of power, military might and courtly intrigue as a king officiates at a pompous ritual. The narrator notices only men at the ceremony, but this may seem quite natural to readers accustomed to European history narratives, which often fail to account for the presence of women at public functions. The Left Hand of Darkness could be historical fiction set just about anywhere -- until we learn that the king is pregnant.
yay! ARG me baby, ARG me!
Anyway, don't know that any of this would be ultimately part of it, but it's enough of a solid clue to maybe get some sort of idea of direction...
For what it's worth, I totally would hope it goes this way instead of the done to death, boring, cliche' holy war religious battle bs (in a traditional sense). Kings being pregnant and things aren't always as they appear - hell yeah, tons cooler premise for and ARG than "devil vs hazeus" anyday.
EDIT for a meta spoiler
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...and I could've sworn I read somewhere that the PM (ahum) is far more into sci fi than the holy war, eh? This just seems far more likely a direction to me...but we shall see...
EDIT - moved to CF with Potentials forum. Please do not make multiple threads for one game in N&R. - SG

and this....for official record here

which is this:
Yin Yang Symbol:
" 'Do you know that sign?' He looked at it a long time with a strange look, but he said, 'No.'
'It's found on Earth...It is yin and yang. Light is the left hand of darkness ...how did it go? Light, dark. Fear, courage. Cold, warmth. Female, male. It is yourself, Therem. Both and one. A shadow on snow.'" (267)

Quick question for shadows - I assume at least some of us sent in a mailing address, right? 'Twould be embarrassing if the reason we've got nothing yet is because there's nobody to send it to.

I did, as I trust the PM. But I have most of my mail sent to a PO box which I haven't checked in a few days...seeing how it's closed when I leave for work, and closed again when I get home.

I too gave my mailing address, so I'm hoping there is something waiting for me in my mailbox tonight...
Unless that $40 I found in there last night is from the PM. If so, can I sign up multiple times

Same here...sent my r/l info before I worked out the PM and that story. Leap of trust, eh? My concern is if there *is* going to be something sent out to the people who signed up - provided it was all at that point - I might have messed it up for myself for defecting over...end up getting the BoL stuff when I've switched. But if that does happen I'd still share it and play it by ear. Just because the one doing the roster changed it doesn't necessarily mean the PM knew about it and was agreeable BTS!
Eh, hope that didn't just toss a wrench into things and commit me into the state of Limbo!

Even though I am positive the PM reads OOG sites pertaining to his game **cough**, I would think it be best that you emailed whomever it is that is running this game (thats IG emailing )and explain that you have changed sides...

Good point, which is why I was mostly banking on the PM figuring it out from the number of times I've pointed to the fact I defect ;-p but I didn't think it was keeping within protocol to go behind the curtain and ask for a recount. Plus, I'd recently had a small correspondence with the PM about something else and didn't want to unnecessarily disrupt the stuff being developed or mess myself up and get a peek before it was ready.
Also, while I prefer the defection to go through, I still have no real idea what the ultimate agenda is for this game so there may not be any feasible grounds for "defection" either way - so I just made it known here and will carry on until we can know something more solid...and if it turns out I'm not allowed to cross over, then I guess I'll go eat some twinkies and regroup
I don't know that the PM even mailed stuff to *everyone* who signed up, as far as financial feasibility that may not happen. If the Lightbringer login is actually a bait trap for advancement, I hope the shadows get something to munch on soon...I feel left out now ;-p Nothing happening with the side I defected to, stuff happening with the side I left but now I don't feel like I should be trying to help crack their password ;-p

So obviously there is a different code for the address. I have to take off so I can't work on it. I think the text in the button might be the password for the Lightbringer site. The text around the outside says, "Bring Forth The Darkness". But that's not a code...just a weird font. Good luck! I'm sure by the time I get back on it will be solved.

I'll have to do some digging but I don't think it's just a weird font. It actually looks like "Gaelic" to me. I'm by no means an expert in Gaelic but I've seen quite a bit of it. I could be wrong but I don't think so, I'm gonna start digging.
