 		 The Hegelian Korporation
hegel was a dirty marxist.
thx for calling me out, loli, i'm a lazy lazy philosopher. (actually a very busy one, but that's kind of beside the point.) >:}

anyway, for anyone who wants to make the slog, i found this very concise (and, imho, correct) interpretation of the hegelian economics of poverty. it's a pretty easy read, but a little bit long, and loaded with philosophy-isms and economics-isms, so if you don't feel like reading it, i don't blame you.

i thought loli's question about investigating similarities and differences between The Korporation and the hegelian korporation was a good one. however, seeing as though hegel was a dirty marxist (no offense, i'm being facetious) the picture doesn't quite fit.

in hegel, the korporation is an intermediate organization between private and public social structures (i think he terms them family and society). the korporation can be anything - anderson cites medieval guilds as historical examples. they function as organizations to create a sense of belonging in the member, and also an outlet for political, social, and economic activity. hegel's conception is specifically geared toward the poor and the role of a korporation to eliminate poverty.

he recognizes that centrally managed economies are clunky things, and the korporation is specifically extra-political -- they have political activity, but the korporation itself is not a part of the government. members of a korporation implicitly "have a heightened consciousness of shared goals and mutual interdependence" (anderson 14).

while the korporation is a benevolent body, it is worth noting that hegel thought that, for stability's sake, a korporation should place limits on the numbers and kinds of people it would allow to join its ranks. this is for balance, the idea being that if a korporation has a variety of professions, it is likely to prevent fluctuations in employment and production.

the goal of the hegelian korporation is economic stability and consumer responsibility. hegel's responsible consumer (konsumer?) is rational, self-conscious (that is, conscious of the effects of his actions) and ethically reflective. hegel's consumer places importance on his responsibility to the korporation's other members to prevent things like shortages, severe price fluctuations, and other difficulties of a pure capitalist economic system.

i really don't think that The Korporation is modeled after the writing of hegel. i think that it's a coincidence that hegel spelled korporation with a k and The Korporation thinks it looks cool.

I thought about this too. Good writing. My findings and final thoughts about the similarities were inconclusive, though I probably have to agree with your thought here.
