[SPEC] New Clue? From new desktop backgrounds .zip New desktop backgrounds from yearzero.nin.com contains mystery file? New desktop backgrounds from yearzero.nin.com contains mystery file? Download the zip and it contains a file called "._08.jpg" which is not a valid JPG. There is one of these for each valid JPG in the archive, but all of those are only 1K - this one is 56K. I can't open in paint, and Notepad yields a pile of code.
Am I being totally dumb, or is there something here?

this could be something (though I personally doubt we'll see any real leads until Saul Williams' album comes out). I checked to see if this file was a hidden .rar but it's not. Something worth looking into though.
edit:
I opened the image up in a word processor to see what I could see.
The file ._07.jpg has only 1 page of text, which is a whole bunch of question marks and the text: JPEG8BIM
._08.jpg is 139 pages long, and along with the crazy gibberish you usually see and the text JPEG8BIM, there are other snippets, like the words Adobe Photoshop CS3, and AppleMark.
While I still have no idea what this is (or if it is an image, how to view it) it's definitely different from the others in the series.

I can't actually open the hidden files as pictures, so I don't know if that would work. Plus I'm on Linux, so I don't have a program.

It's been said that the "hidden" images ( ._0?.jpg ) are files for Macs, and has something to do with the way they handle .zip archives.
So that particular piece looks to be a dead end although there could still be clues else where in the download.

There's no reason to close it.
Just because the initial spec turned out to be nothing doesn't mean there isn't something else waiting to be found.
Besides It's good to ask questions and dig around even if it turns up nothing, if not for that how else would so much have been discovered in the first place?

These are Mac OSX metadata settings files.
