[META][TRAILHEAD] 1-18-08: Possible new arg/puzzle?
This is pretty interesting nonetheless

Hey all, I'm new to the party here, but thought I'd chime in with some interesting findings. Some of the below information could possibly be considered "spoilers" regarding the possible ARG and related movie trailer. Read on at your own discretion.

So I went and saw The Transformers tonight. (excellent, btw) Before the movie, there was this odd trailer. Fascinating, but odd. There was no mention of a title, and just a VERY fast flicker of a credits page. All the information that was released was "1-18-08". Naturally, I raced home and typed in "1-18-08.com" and sure enough, it looks like it might be linked. So, here's some info:

First, read this rundown, it's a good description of the trailer:
JJ Abrams article
(super wide URL hidden with a link, and /#comment-26691 removed from end of URL -- catherwood)

Then, check out the website I found:
http://1-18-08.com (note: the picture here looks very similar to the "feel" of the trailer)

I took the liberty of running a whois on the site. It was created back in March. Definitely sounds like a ramp-up for some viral marketing, or perhaps even an ARG! Smile Note the names in the whois information. Usually businesses will put their contact info here, or more likely, keep it anonymous. I'm wondering if the information displayed here might possibly be linked to more clues in the (possible) ARG. Whois link:
http://whois.domaintools.com/1-18-08.com

And some text from the whois, just in case:

I have no idea if the name Henry Kelvin is from the movie or is significant in any other way. That isn't much of a clue for me.

However, I did track the domain back to servers owned by "Paramount Digital Entertainment", so that looks official to me.

Hey everyone! New to the ARG phenomenon, but it caught my interest.

Anyway, I saw Transformers and saw the trailer. I dare say, it was the coolest, most innovative trailer I've ever seen.

Apparently, it's a teaser for what is being called "Cloverfield". I don't know if it's the official name of the movie, but it will apparently be a movie filmed from the hand-held camera perspective of various people in the city as a giant monster attacks. Or something similar.

Either way, it looks cool.

Not sure if it's an ARG, but the SPLAT thing leads me to believe it is.

guest: splat is just the forums way of encoding the @ in an email address to deter spambots.

that said, I saw this trailer too, and it was definitely mesmerizing... seemed to end suddently without showing a movie name. I really hope there's more... at this point I think it's just a viral, mysterious movie trailer... but it would be nice if they have at the very least an extended experience to draw out the mystery... an ARG would be great.

Ah, there we go. Forgot to log in Embarassed

Anyway...it would be cool if we get an ARG out of this. As things look now, though, it just seems to be a viral trailer to get people hyped.

One can hope...

The use of steg detection programs eludes me. Actually, even something as simple as it's installation eludes me. I'm kinda dumb.

Anyway, can someone run that image through a steg detector?

using my basic knowledge of stegdetect, it doesn't appear to be using any kind of stegonography.

I can't find any other EXIF data, but I'm no expert.

also, 'sup FO buddy?

There are a couple of people who go between UF and FO.

Heh, UFO.

Myself, I'm pretty sure McForum, a few others.

BAD ROBOT
was shown up front

I saw this last night (3rd) when I took my 8 y/o to see Transformers. Amusingly, on a side note, standing in line at the concession this one guy said he grew up on the Transformers and couldn't wait to get inside. I asked if he'd been playing the game and he immediately assumed I was referring to the PS games. I said no, the ARG. He looked at me like I fell out of a tree and said no, so I told him just a little about the earlier trailer and the audio wave, and sectorseven and takara83 and his eyes glazed over - so I let it ride but it was funny....

Except felt kinda stupid when in the final film, that same scene was not in it Rolling Eyes

Anyway, the trailer there begins with BAD ROBOT really quickly and then goes on into the teaser. I too sat there perplexed wondering *well what the hell is this movie?* but I could've sworn that right after BAD ROBOT flashed and the party scene began, the friends were all referring to the main guy "Rob" and I was distracted a bit later when someone amid the panic said whatever the growling thing was, it was a giant lion.

I intended to check for bad robot when I got home but it stormed here and I never got around to it. Maybe bad robot and the date code together might yield more? Just a thought.

PS: I really enjoyed seeing Transformers. Not a bad flick at all.

---------
EDIT: okay, so that answers that. ;-p

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Robot_Productions and for what it's worth, the 1.18.08.com site is using urchin tracker so they'll end up visiting UF before long when they figure out ALL their visitors are coming from here so....maybe vote ARG really loud and they will listen Wink

My first impression wasn't godzilla actually (but it's referenced at IMDB as godzilla as the monster)....soon as I heard the TRex roar something just hit me that *now this would be kick ass in light of this being a trailer prior to Transformers, if it turned out to be.....in that infamous metallic voice*

I Am.....Iron Man Surprised

That would rule.

Images

I'm sure this has no real relevance outside "artistic" but it seemed to me the image on the 1.18.08 site was the same chick....so to see how it looked I switched them around to one face instead of two and it looks familiar. Any ideas?

And of course there's an edit. I noticed between them something but the image was too dark (least on mine) so I brightened it and WTF? Heh. Looks like a little demon thing up there between them.

Or have I had entirely too much coffee today?

Don't call people whose names show up in the WHOIS stuff. They are often, if not always, out of game. If they are in-game, then they'll let us know another way.

Also, while this certainly smells of viral marketing, it does not smell of ARG. Yet.
