"Where -" he coughed in reply, and then swallowed. "Where are you?"
All around him, beds of fresh scree and loose rocks clung onto the slope. The landscape had changed so much that any landmarks were obscured. Daniel's gaze skipped over Catbite Gorge, looking for a signal amongst the visual noise. He quickly discovered a small splash of red, and a hand waving painfully.

 		For those who might, for cultural reasons, be unfamiliar with the rules of cricket, here is everything you need to know on the subject:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and remains out until he's out, at which point he's no longer in and so comes in - whereupon the next man goes in until he's out and comes in. When they have all been in, gone out, got out and come in, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out, particularly if a man claims to be in when he is, in fact, out and has to be sent in. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

 		I found this one quite easy once I figured out my list of numbers from 1 to 25 was missing the number 7. Up until that point I was stumped.

And it seems a shame to have a blue with only four possible answers; you really don't have to work it out. Which I am culturally impaired at doing anyway, rand0m. Confused

Sorry, even with an "explanation" of slightly better quality than rand0m's, it makes no sense to me. So I guessed.

 		I asked a cricketing friend about this one and this is his reply

Looking at it from a purely cricketing point of view, I can tell you that bowler B bowled the last over (otherwise, the figures wouldn't have stopped on 4.1) and, because bowlers A and C bowled the most overs they must have done the first 8 over spell each out of the 24.1 overs bowled. If the 4th wicket fell in the 12th over, and bowler C got 4 wickets, bowler A must've got his 1 wicket in the first over of his second spell (when facing lower order batsmen), therefore, I reckon bowler C must have taken the first wicket.


Hope you are wiser after reading that. I'm not sure I was. But I got the right answer. And even if I have to ask somebody it feels more satisfying than guessing Smile

A duck is when a batsman is out for no runs - embarrassing for the specialist batsmen who are supposed to pile up most of the runs, less so (but still undesirable) for the specialist bowlers who take their turn at the end of the order and aren't expected to contribute very much. A golden duck is when a batsman is out to the very first ball he faces - there are worse fates that can befall a cricketer, but not many.

The answer makes sense now, but trying to work forward from a crash course in cricket rules via Google got me nowhere fast. Especially the fractional Over.

 		It's really not fair I can't quote both of the last posts without typing the tags myself -- something, at this particular moment, I am too lazy to do. Suffice to say I agree with you both -- even after about an hour of research, the game of cricket is still incomprehensible to my poor American brain. That said, rand0m, I'll be happy to help you out deciphering the arcane formulae for passer ratings if you need it Razz
