[S2] [Cards set] #129 Topologic
500 points

Guest Puzzle Architect: Peter Blake

If one object can be mapped onto another via a continuous bijection that has a continuous inverse, the objects are said to be topologically equivalent. For the non-mathematical among you, this is the same as saying you can turn a stretchable model of the first object into the second by moulding it, but without tearing or joingin parts together.

Group the marked objects in this picture into sets that are topologically equivalent.

"Is that Saunion?"

Daniel scratched his leg while trying to plot a safe route down. the rock fall had made the slope desperately unsafe and it would be easy to accidentally dislodge more debris.

"Saunion?" repeated the voice in his ear hopefully.

"I can see you, keep moving, I'm heading over now," he replied.

"Great... I can't believe..."

The voice broke off into sobbing as Daniel slowly made his way down towards the waving hand below. Loose pebbles crunched and scattered underneath his boots, setting off chain reactions. He never considered himself to be much of a climber, and this was the kind of situation he hated most, half-crouching, half-slipping down a slope. As he traversed across, he lost his footing and slid down sideways until he managed to flip himself round and spread his arms out. Shaking, he slowly stood upright, and looked for the hand once again. It took him a while to find it, since it had stopped moving.

Hint:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Topology looks only at the surface of things so it doesn't matter what shape they are what matters is how many holes they have

and if you just want the answer it's
Confirmed solve
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Armchair = Hat
Doughnut = Coffee cup
Pretzels = Jumper

I did get this one right, but I'm not sure I totally understand.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Doesn't the jumper have four holes, and the pretzel only three? Or do the head and waist opening in the jumper count only as one hole? If so, how come the two sleeves don't also count as only one? Am I just overthinking?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you think of the hem of the main hole of the jumper being equivalent to the outside edge of the pretzel then it's easier to envisage three holes being punched in the continuum of the jumper (head and both arms).
Does that help? I think I talked myself out of understanding that part way through!
