#49 - Orange - Bookworm Imagine that a bookworm has managed to get past the security and cleaning devices in the Perplex City Library and reached the very tasty 10 volume 'The Collected Writings and Travels of Noi'. Each volume has 1000 pages in total. If the bookworm starts eating at page 1 of volume 1 and finishes at page 1000 of volume 10, how many pages of Noi's writings has it eaten through?

theres the image from the card catalog, i know it doesnt give any more information, but it is nice to see what the card looks like.

If the books are arranged on a bookshelf, the first page of the first book is right next to volume 2, and the last page of the last book is right next to volume 9. So the two outter books only have 1 page eaten through each, making the total pages eaten 8,002 I think.

How could the bookworm begin at page one, in sixsidedsquare's example, and not begin through the back cover? Wouldn't he get squished?
But then, *maybe* Perplexians put their books on shelves upside down! Hey, ya never know with those guys!
I know it says he starts at page one, but what about the covers? Doesn't he have to go through all the covers to enter, go from book to book, and then exit? Or does he just stop at page 1,000 of volume 10, and live there for the rest of his life? Although sixsidedsquare's theory is a good one, did 'Anna' put that much thought into this puzzle?
It bothers me that an *orange* card requires so much analyzing, so please consider this:

Pages 1 and 2 (for example), are really just one sheet of paper, right? So, maybe the answer is 5,000 pages total... or something close to that number, if I've missed some other minor detail.
That seems more like an *orange* card answer, to me!

To clarify, the questions specifies pages of writings, ie exclude covers.
The two different accepted answers (from Hituro and Oliverkeers13) are both correct accepted because the question does not specify which side of page 1 vol 1 page 1000 vol 10 the worm starts from so it could either eat through both or neither of those pages.
I wonder whether it would accept the number inbetween?

Well, I thought this one was a good one... As for the answer being less, you must take into consideration that pages and leaves of paper are two different things. Originally when the book would have been written the author would have writting 2 pages to a sheet of paper in the book. Hense there being 2 pages on one sheet...
