[VL][trailhead] VaporLofts

Several months ago I found myself friended by a livejournal user named point_system. After finding myself initially baffled regarding her identity, I began running through her archive as well as her friends list. Her name is Anne, and the journal was begun in May of this year, and the introductory post calls into question a slip of paper left on the author's doorstep, which contains four GPS coordinates on it. After running through her friends list, I found that a good portion of the people she'd friended had terms like "ilovebees" or "arg" listed in their interests. I went ahead and friended point_system, and watched for a spell.

Her entry today began as such:
Quote:
An airplane exploded five miles over the Pacific Ocean. To date, there is only one known survivor, found 32 hours and 14 minutes later amidst the floating wreckage and remains of the airliner. Recollection of her life previous to her contact with the rescue teams who found her is limited to basic locational identifiers and her name, which causes warrant for further investigation into her medical files.
The entry goes on to explain that the woman survived both the initial explosion and a 30,000 foot drop into the ocean, no longer has any long term memory, and seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis. Anne, meanwhile, apparently is associated with a corporation in Atlanta named VaporLofts.

So far I haven't sorted much out, but Anne's journal as well as the VaporLofts homepage seem to have some ARG elements to them. I thought so initially but thought it wise to lay back and watch for a while, but after today's post and exploring some of the VaporLofts page I decided now was as good a time as any to mention it.

The text mirrors a May 19th entry on Anne's journal, found here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/point_system/1992.html

ETA: The sourcecode for VaporLoft's main page has some interesting secrets. banner1.jpg has this as its alt text:
Code:
    * Natural replicators have all or most of their design from nonhuman sources.
    * Autotrophic replicators can reproduce themselves in the wild. They mine their own materials. Usually they are designed by humans, and in particular, can easily accept specifications for human products.
    * Self-reproductive systems produce copies of themselves from industrial feedstocks such as metal bar and wire.
    * Self-assembling systems assemble copies of themselves from finished, delivered parts.

While googling for VaporLofts a third page - aside from the VaporLofts home page and Anne's journal - comes up which is another livejournal of a user called diary_of_a_cat . VaporLofts is listed as that user's website, but entries stop in November 2004, dating back to February of the same year.
If there is something to VaporLofts, it doesn't seem like this livejournal is connected to anything.

has anyone tried calling the vapor lofts phone number? I did a reverse lookup on it and it is not registered. Also just did a white pages search for Vapor loft and it is not listed.

Sure, why not. Just called and got a normal

we're not here to take your call, leave a message with your name, number and the nature of your call

message.

Plus, E-Mail sent to the address on the home page has, as of yet, gone unanswered.

Me too...wondering what I will get back.

This seems like it could be pretty interesting. One thing that intersts me is that Anne is the tech contact but it looks like she just got hired. I know with most DNS registrations that info doesn't get updated with personel changes but with renewed DNS registrations. Intersting that she is the contact as a new employee as well. Oh well...just something I noticed.

Yeah, immediately after posting this thread I went ahead and called and got the machine. Left my name, number, and stated that I was an interested party in Boise seeking business. We'll see.

A probably useless observation:
The last 4 digits of the IP match with the last 4 digits of the floor plan's number in the path of the URL.
080586 is that number and 64.111.105.86 is the IP which reverts back to DreamHost.
When I checked the email yesterday I got timeouts, but right now it's working fine.

Did some more checking around on this live journal. There are some strange posts there. definitely more to it that it apears. Also has reference to 2 ficticious companies in addition to vaporlofts. Will take some more time to see if I can find anything else from the images on the site.

http://vaporlofts.com/ has been updated. What used to be "View Floorplans" on floor 1 moved to floor 2, and now floor 1 has an actual floorplan, instead of that Keeper of the Fire story. Floorplan here:

I just rcvd email from them as well. The same message. Wondering where we will go.

Check out the image of the floorplan. 3 room for power and a classified area??? And the living room is called gatewayone. I am also curious why there is one room with a designation 5493, when there is no designation on the other rooms.

EDIT: I am wondering if this image is stegged. I have tried destegging it but I am not that good yet. Any help would be great. Looking at it with a text editor right at the beginning it says Ducky. Don't know what that means.

More than likely it's a matter of photoshop coding the image. I've found the same tag in images unrelated to this game. Good eye, though.
