[PUZZLE] #145 - Blue - The Red Ace text reads:
the other day i was down at bullets poker club in the mobius strip playing texas hold em. it was a pretty tight crowd and i couldnt get much action but this was one of the more interesting hands of the night.
i limped in on the button with suited connectors (8's, 9's). The flip came down Ac, 7's, 6's. A rock in ealy position raised it up up about triple the big blind. Everyone folded round to me but i stayed along for the ride. He had a pretty sizable stack and didnt hesitate to go all in when a red ace hit on the turn. this put me in a tricky spot, my fear was obviously that he'd been slow oplaying rockets.
if that were the case, the onlyway to win the hand would be to land a straight flush on the river.
two questions for you:
1. what are my odds of hitting that killer straight flush?
2. out of interest, what are my odds of making any straight or flush at the river?
no prizes for guessing what i did with my hand.

Odds of straight flush = 2/46 (2 outs, 46 cards unknown)
Odds of straight = 6/46 (8 ways to make a straight, minus the 2 that would make a straight flush)
Odds of flush = 7/46 (9 spades remaining, minus the 2 that make the straight flush
Odds of any straight or flush = 15/46 (adding the 3 other odds)
Jeb
edit: also, just noticed some spelling mistakes, maybe a kloo to a deeper puzzle?

and i'll take the no prize of fold that hand (probably, well... I mean, depends on the pot odds you're getting on it, but unless you were sat with one chip in front of you, you're going to fold it. Yeah... )

Looking at the card itself (though it's hard to read at 60dpi) I think that most of those errors are transcription errors and not on the card.
I'm already longing for the days of detail scans...

No detail scans any more - see the mind candy site, and discussion in the PXC Puzzle Cards META page.

Heh, that was good
Yeah, I know there's no more detail scans... That's why I'm remembering them fondly. Lawyers. Sigh.

oops, gotta fix that, mis-read the q..
6s 7s 8s 9s are what's held..
so on the turn you've got to get 5s or 10s to make the straight flush.
1/23 chance of hitting the straight flush on the turn or river.
Actually, if she's CERTAIN the other person has bullets, it's 1/22
5c 5s 5h 5d 10c 10s 10h 10d as 2s 3s 4s js qs ks would get a straight or a flush so that's
15/46 chance of that happening on the river (assuming it's not happened on the turn. A less likely 7/22 if she's certain the opponent has two aces. Slightly lower because the opponent would be holding one of the possible outs (As)
FWIW, they shouldn't. If they do, they're never gonna be rich playing poker .. If you have bullets pre-flop, you want as few players in the game post flop as far as I'm concerned.. I'd have put him on AK, AQ or A6 or A7. Maybe even suited for the flush
**Edited to account for minor error regarding the As

cos the rest went after flop (which had an A) the chances are increased that they didnt hold As -- so greater chance that your opponant has them - but shes well stacked -- so id go for it -- never forgive yourself for missing a straight flush -- but that not based on maths but on the way humans play - and lets face it , if it wasnt for the human element computers would win at poker (which they dont)

Is it worth pointing out that "Red Ace" is an anagram of "Receda"? Or is that too obvious?

I'm stuck here - how are there 46 cards left?
There are 4 in the middle; 2 in each player's hand (of 2 players) out of 52 to start with so there should be 44 left. This is assuming all the other players' cards have been put back into the deck after they folded - I didn't think this happened but I am not very well up on poker and, as we aren't told how many other players there were, I suppose it must have done.
