It's common practice for movies these days to have Viral campaigns (Some are even actual ARGs, like the one for Tron) to kickstart them. Have a look at the News & Rumors section, there's a viral for Looper, Coma, Prometheus, Bourne Legacy, Homeland, Paranormal Activity... probably half a dozen others.

I know that already, I've participated in several of them. Even won an argus cube from the Super 8 ARG. But this doesn't look like an ARG, it looks like they're using a vlog format to lead up to the movie--which is cool anyway.

Yeah, I'm thinking they're doing like a buildup prequel sort of thing before the movie, in vlog format.

Was more replying to robgmartin. Should've quoted him.
Your distinction is why I was careful make the distinction between a viral promotion and an ARG.

Lol, and it is comments and threads like this is why I love hanging with you guy's. Btw, ChildofAtom, I understood the comment was directed at me. I just posted the link and assumed they MIGHT be starting an ARG but you are probably more correct in that it is more likely a viral promotion. We'll have to see where they go with it (if anywhere).

I'm a horrible person Not going to lie, I don't like getting scared. The only thing that keeps me liking Slender Man is the fact that he really doesn't scare me in any way. MH has given me some shock value but overall it wasn't very scary so I watch it. I don't mind them doing this to slender man because it sounds like a good concept and I might watch it as long as I don't get scared.
Yea I know. I am a wimp.

Another video up. 2nd video up in the channel I posted earlier:
YouTube: Link
Yeah. It looks like they are trying to viral campaign it... I do have to give them SOME kudo's for viral campaigning it this way. At LEAST they are giving somewhat of a nod towards the vlog community in attempting to do their campaign this way. We'll have to see how they are going to lead into the movie from this.

As for Slendy, Johnathon points him out (not knowing who or, lol, what he is) at 2:29 in the 2nd video I just posted. In the first video this falls at about the 3:34-35 mark when the distortion first starts.

That was actually a really good, very tense two videos. I hope they keep going with this to build to the movie. Also: interest in this movie just jumped up big time for me.

And then? New video? In which I find something weird Soooo.....gamejack or outright relevant to this situation?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ItceM4yCkE&feature=plcp
When first watching the trailer I was like....DIEINNAFIRE!(Sorry, that's really how I felt). Both for the rabid fanverse this will create (as if this one isn't already rabid enough...yes, I love you all) and also for the seeming shoehorning of Slendy as just another monster in need of a bad movie. I don't really like the fact that they took the Operator symbol for a creature that is blatantly NOT our beloved MH's Slendy....but whatever, I really can't find anything else to say except 'wow, another freakin monster movie, but it has Slendy so I'll pay $20 and probably wish I'd just met him in the woods and given him the twenty to go buy ice cream for Jeff the Killer and Smiledog or something'.
BUT....and this is a big but, they DID decide to honor the fans in a way I can appreciate with vlogs. This really makes me happy, although the last time I was this in love with vlogs it was Cloverfield, a mistake my grandfather will never let me forget. I'm hesitant but I might be willing to see if I get burned a second time.
Question to those smarter than me. On the movie poster it says 'based on the creation of Victor Surge'. Which is true I suppose, but hasn't Slendy kinda become urban legend material? Does this mean they have to pay him for the rights to use 'his' creation? If this is true, then why aren't they acknowledging the MH's crew for the Operator symbol? Does this count as a parody? I'm confused about who really owns what in this situation, and in ARGs and viral promotions in general, this has always been a subject I never really understood and would like some clarification if it can be provided?

Re: And then? New video? In which I find something weird
I looked at it and, personally, I am in the camp of a POSSIBLE gamejack. The reason I say this is that he/she (after subscribing to Johnathon's channel, commenting there, and uploading the response video) also subscribed to some of the more well known vlogs we follow here. Also, over on facebook, there is no mention of this video (i.e. "Who is this?" or something similar). While not definitive proof it does make me leery of it being a gamejack. I subscribed just to see where this channel might go, so we'll have to see. I also noticed another possible gamejack (not saying it is but I am suspicious. If you look in the comments of both this channel AND Johnathon's channel there is someone with the screeny "tr000" who is attempting to communicate with both Johnathon's channel AND this new channel. The problem with the "tr000" channel is that the content there is already AT least 3 years old AND extensive. Again I subscribed to this channel and will have to see where this one goes as well.

I agree with you there. That is why I brought it to the boards attention. At least with this movie they are honoring where the universe grew. If they do it right it could work out well. On the other hand it could crash-and-burn. Again... just have to see.

I think it falls somewhere in the realm of "fair use" and copyright law. Acknowledging the original creator, Victor Surge, is a step in the right direction on their part. However the use of MH's Operator symbol is another matter entirely. I think (and others can correct me if I am wrong) others have used MH's symbol in their own vlogs as well (I know I have seen it used but off the top of my head I can't point to it. Maybe someone can refresh me on this or (lol) tell me I am wrong ). That is a gray area at least. You could try to contact the MH guys and see what they think.
