Let's take this idea to its logical conclusion. Imagine that your only source of income is your YouTube partnership. Your channel is famous for frightening and creepy videos, your audience are mostly horror fans. But what if nothing scary happens to you for a while, what do you do then - starve? No, you have two options, first - make some fake scary videos or second - unnecessarily put yourself in danger, just so that you could film it, put on YouTube and earn a little bit of money. That may include exploring creepy locations at night, spontaneously wandering into Operator-infested woods for no apparent reason or blindly trusting your murderous scumbag of a friend. All those times Jay did something idiotic? He was just trying to make an exciting video so that he could pay his bills.

About the whole "staying in hotel rooms every night" thing

Are we still obsessed with calling out everyone who starts a new thread as if the internet is running out of space? No? Okay, good.

This is one of the biggest complaints regarding "realism" that I've seen (and STILL see) about the series: the fact that Jay can afford to stay in hotel rooms seemingly every night. I'm here to explain why that's a bunch of bullshit. Or at least attempt to.

First off, do we have confirmation that Jay spends EVERY night in a hotel room? No. Usually he doesn't give us any information about where he's staying (especially lately, since he's probably realized that if people are actively trying to find you, making your location known to the world isn't a good thing).

We know that he's been living in hotels on-and-off since his apartment burned down. Now, if he had renter's insurance, he probably got a fair amount of money from that. We can also assume he wasn't just living paycheck to paycheck at the time, and he had a bit in his savings account. I think between insurance money and savings, he definitely could've afforded the "extended" stay at the beginning of Season 2 (the only time when we were able to confirm that he was actually in a hotel for weeks at a time)

For the seven months he was working with Alex, I think we have plenty of evidence that he slept in his car for most of that time. There are a few entries (none of which I remember by number) that show him sleeping there, or at least hanging out there in the dark. At this time he could have started working odd jobs to save up money, while only really purchasing food and other necessities. Let's go with the absolute minimum: we'll say he needs $20 a day for food. That's $140 a week. If he's managing to make around $200 a week from just barely working, he has $60 left over every week that goes toward savings and other [minor] expenses. That's $240 a month. Multiply that by 7 months and he has nearly $1700 saved up.

We're not talking about Las Vegas hotels here; this is the middle of fucking nowhere in Alabama. It's not unlikely that he only has to pay $30-$40 a night to stay in these hotels.

Jay doesn't give us a lot of details about his personal life, so we may never know for sure just how often he sleeps in his car and how often he stays at hotels. But this post exists to explain that it's definitely not impossible for him to have the occasional extended stay at a hotel.

Anyone want to agree with me or explain why I'm wrong?

Firstly, this is the only forum I've ever been on that has a problem with multiple threads. It's silly, but probably a result of the fact that there are no MH subforums. But this thread ain't about dat shit

That first hotel from Season 2 wasn't that tall, which makes me suspect it was more motel-y than hotel-y. Probably pretty cheap, yeah. And yeah, he has his car. Between savings, possibly having parents, insurance, and odd jobs, it's not unfeasible for him to survive as he has been. He was free for a decent while; it's not unlikely that he managed to hold down a job for that time. And now that he's basically hanging around the same area, he could have a new stable job.

So yeah, I don't see a problem with Jay being able to survive.

Then again, I haven't really seen anyone complaining about that aspect of the realism...? Maybe that's just me.

In any case, I like that this thread will be openly available for any newbies who want to question the thought. No one's going to rifle through pages and pages of unrelated threads (this could really go in any Entry, and later on no noobs would ever find it). So it's good that this has its own thread.

People have complained about it. Personally though, I liked Tim's answer of "Who gives a shit?" better.

Watch out, dude! There was a thread on this particular subject a while back. Someone's about to freak out and have a temper tantrum.

And yeah, I find that it's easier to just not focus on this aspect of the series. He probably has money saved up and works some kind of job in between. Plus all the stuff you said makes sense. It's really not important in my eyes.

Okay now, I don't think this needs anything more than Tim's answer.

There was already a post about this topic, and it was agreed that insurance, odd jobs, and parents were jays funding. But I liked tims " who gives a shit" answer the best.

All of this isn't even taking into account a couple of things:

1. Student loans. You can get WAY more money than you need out of student loans--especially if you don't end up taking any classes (in which case they'd come after you for the money... But Jay doesn't have a permanent residence, so they'd have a hard time tracking him down to collect.)

2. Credit. If Jay were smart about it, he could live for a while on credit cards, assuming he started the series in a position to acquire them. Again, he might not be able to make the payments, so they would get shut down and debt collectors would come, but see above.

3. His parents. While he's been silent on the subject of them, it's not entirely unlikely that he could contact his parents for money. This could go as low as $20 every so often to see him through, to "daddy is wealthy lol look at all these benjamins".

In short, anything from an intricate credit scheme to a handwavey "daddy's money" solution could solve this problem, so in the immortal words of Captain Sideburns himself, again, "who gives a shit?"

Once again, "Who gives a shit?" is the best answer. Sure we believe that Alex killed someone and that people are being stalked by a faceless freak, so how hard is it to believe that Jay has money?
