[SPEC] A more accurate resource?

OK, i know we've all been using sites like RandMcNally, MapQuest, Acme, etc. to find these coordinates, but I've noticed something that may help.

I checked out the new Las Vegas coordinates on all of the more popular tools, and they came up in the middle of a huge intersection on the strip. Not much help, as there's four very populated corners to that intersection, with who knows how many payphones.

But, when I check the coordinates on www.geocaching.com the location comes up very specifically as the southwest corner of that intersection.

My thought is, that since geocaching.com is about, well, geocaching, it might be somehow a little more accurate than these others?? Or perhaps beyond that, may have been the site used to generate these locations.

Only problem is, you need to be registered (free) to be able to zoom all the way in on maps at geocaching.com. Can someone who's been at a live axon location check out their coordinates at geocaching and see if it more accurately displays the actual location than the other tools?

checking it out right now, vpisteve...

let ya know in a bit.

UPDATE- It's actually not much of a difference. I KNOW the point we previously used in Bensenville was precisely inside a building (Monty's Banquet Hall), and the GPS handhelds put the point exactly in the parking lot. Mapquest put the point across the street, but RIGHT on the edge, so it was still only one of two phones.

Geocaching.com, only moves the point maybe about 3 feet across the street (just on the other side's edge. Not in the building, and not at the payphone in the gas station across the street either... still just as much of a guess)

So, all in all, it may be good for some congested spots, but for suburbia, it's still a coin toss. (I'd still trust it over a one meter resolution aerial photo, though...)

Hope that helps!

edit - also one of the LONGEST free sign-ups I've ever had to do... like 3 steps of seriously detailed info. I put my old address though, so it shouldn't be a problem with them selling my name to a spam snail-mail list though!

When they try to sell you a subscription, just hit the login button and you'll get to the free login stuff.

Note - just another tool. I just tested it on the "hello" axon we got yesterday - it does indeed yield a different result from mapquest and acme, but it's also wrong - this time down around the corner on Pennsylvania Ave (where there are no payphones) rather than a little up 17th Street where we found the phone.

I just show up early with friends and the scout out as many phones as we can. Then we call all of them, find which accept incoming, and then camp all the ones that work and are nearby.

Great. Confused

I bet there's 777 payphones within 100 feet of this intersection in any direction. Bang Head

Thanks for checking, guys.

Axon hunt

As far as I know, the coords are the address of where the payphone is. For example, I sent in some coords for a payphone to be added as an axon. The coords were extremely close to where the phone was, but Melissa would not accept them because they were "not close enough". I sent her the exact coordinates of the address listed on the phone and she accepted those (even though the coords are like, nearly a block away from the phone).

This is why when I went to track down the one in Hollywood, FL with a GPS, we ended up in the middle of a baseball field. The coords are just the address on the phone and are NOT exactly where the phone is.

Hope that helps.

Reviving a VERY old thread? Maybe I shouldn't have un-stickied the "behavior of axons" post.

Some axons were created by address. Some absolutely were not. Use all available tools to traingulate on your possible location.
