[TRAILHEAD?] foundonthetape - HL2 Horror mod ARG, maybe? http://www.youtube.com/user/foundonthetape
Seems like a new horror ARG popping up on YouTube. Hopefully this won't get taken down due to graphic content..
Found it on http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/iyr59/arg_for_something_new_maybe_from_valve_heres_a/
edit:original reddit thread where it was posted for the first time - subject hints strongly on ARG..
Quote:
In the middle, there's a very rapid string of characters. I downloaded the video and slowed it down, getting the hex string 74696E7975726C2E636F6D2F4256552D383030
Converted to ASCII, it resolves to tinyurl.com/BVU-800?. Remove the ? and here you go.
It links to a file called foundonthetape_1.bsp on Megaupload.com. It is a TF2 map. Drop it into your /maps folder and open it up. Look up, turn on noclip and fly up... If it does something crazy, do me a favor and be ready to take a screenshot and record the sound then upload it. It's all pretty freaky and it looks like there's some further data hidden in the sound and picture file that pops up shortly...
What was found in the comments:
-It's not TF2 map, it's Half-Life 2 map. After opening it, it looks like this: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/594691738640846396/328DAA391BE294F3C3E68CFE362B31E426339F22/
-There are two audio files in it, http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CUT9QZZM and http://www.megaupload.com/?d=46YYC94V and an image - http://i.imgur.com/eHtyA.png
I already sent him a message, asking if he can disclose anything more about the origins of the tapes, or the person who brought them.
Nothing else I could find by quick googling.. This is my first trailhead post, so, hopefully I'm not doing it wrong.
edit: there is now a foundonthetape Wiki , Steam group , and an IRC channel - thanks TymaxBeta!

I saw a thread about this on /x/ and came here to see if anything had been posted. It looks interesting so far. I can't think of any games that have involved game maps as well as other media.

I just hope it's not gonna end up in a screamer. The map actually pops up the image in it and starts playing quiethorrorloop.wav all of a sudden after a few seconds of player hitting WASD keys..

New info! This was posted on uploader's youtube account:

Text is in HEX and translates to:

Now, the email is obvious, but what's the 10.7mb part?

Sorry for doublepost, but figured it would be less of a mess this way:
I should've googled before actually posting it, silly me. Quick googling leads me here , which says:
Someone on reddit also found out that the metadata to one of the audio files in the new map, taperedemption.wav, says "Some things arent meant to be known..."
There is some wild linking going around currently, but considering their mass hysteria and the fact they connect everything to Valve, even if it doesn't make any sense at all, there is probably no point in relinking those speculations. Only one that could be actually IG is this - an IRC chat log with someone who apparently is behind the videos.

So this isn't for HL2:Ep3. But it's still intriguing. Gotta love indie fun.

Just here to tell you guys that are interested in this that we have a Wiki going for it here:

Good luck guys, I know I'll be following this, regardless of Valve's involvement, or rather lack of.

The whole EP3/Valve idea was just completely silly reddit bandwagon that everyone jumped just because the map was .bsp.. There was no way Valve would use megaupload AND program a screamer, if you ask me.
Thanks, adding to the first post!

Templar Code I finally found the code: The Templar Code, after much long digging.
So far, I've deciphered: IMSTILLSTUCKEMAILTAPEONTHE
Perhaps someone here can add to my find?

He posted a bulletin of binary. Translated to English, it's another map download. I downloaded it, will update with my results!

EDIT-
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Okay, it's a ventilation shaft. Many different routes. Random junk, I guess you can use it mark places you've been to if you get lost.
I found a radio playing some kind of morse. No way for me to record what's going on, so I can't put this on YouTube as far as I know. Still going through the map.

If you have any sort of microphone (which I'm assuming you don't since you said you can't record), there is a Morse decoder program that will listen and translate in real-time.
Wish I could play the map myself...HL2 is one of the few Valve games I don't have on my PC.

OKAY - WHOA. If you thought the last one was scary, listen to this:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There's a bloody corridor that I found (I unfortunately had to resort to noclip) and through following it, you fall down a shaft. Things turn colorful rather than black and white, and your half submerged in water. Bloody water. It's super dark and there's only 2 ways to go. One is a dead end. Soon, things start shaking and ALL OF THE SUDDEN a damn armless freaky thing is chasing me! It was like Amnesia. After hauling ass as best I could, I found another dead end, but this time it was a lit up shaft with a ladder. I couldn't get farther than this, and you might have to play it in Half Life to make it work properly. The monster couldn't hurt me and I couldn't do anything at the dead end.

Right, but I meant... like, in-screen recording as I play. Unless there's something free (and EASY to use). I have a mic, but that's just audio (which would be fine if the radio was the ONLY thing to find). If nobody else posts stuff soon (which I doubt), I will do what I can.
EDIT -
Back with pictures. I captured most of the important parts. I assumed the radio was important, but it may not be anything given what was discovered AFTER that. Might not even be morse at all - just white noise.

I filtered it so that all of the pictures there on the side bar are the ones you want to see. Read the captions if you want more info. Enjoy.
I recommend someone tries this in Episode 2. Maybe there's some script stuff that can only happen in that game.
