All Nimbus wants is for people to discover their own effects themselves. It makes sense, it encourages creativity and learning programs like he did. I can see why he thinks that this tutorial may just promote bad series making just for the effect. And I also kinda agree that I don't want this to lead to an over saturation of tentacles everywhere in every developing vlog. But oh well, someone was bound to make a tutorial sometime figuring it out.

Also, how does a tentacle tutorial fit into a "Video & Audio Distortion Tutorials" thread? Tentacles are not distortion...

Cochino started this thread to post all the tutorials he makes. Saying that tentacles aren't distortion is just semantics.

It's understandable if Nimbus wants to keep his methods proprietary. Even if Cochino figured out how to execute those methods on his own without Nimbus' help, if they give the user the same result consistently as the one seen in TT, then Nimbus has every right to be concerned. *Concerned*. And from a professional standpoint, it would be good form for Cochino to keep that a secret at Nimbus' request, though he would not necessarily be forced to. And of course if Nimbus is okay with his methods being known, then it's a moot point. Though I should add that Nimbus is well within reason to specifically give Cochino permission like he did.

That said, there are lots of ways to create a tentacle effect that is consistent but doesn't look similar at all (spider-like arms, for example). Those techniques are not necessarily within the scope of TT any more than the concept of tentacles on Slenderman is within the scope of TT. Those techniques could be presented without cause for concern or considerations toward permission, as they don't fall within the territory of any existing series.

I hope that clears things up a little.

On a unrelated topic people have told me WMM and iMovie are pretty crappy for Slender-effects.

So does anyone know any (legal) free video editing software good for Slender-effects?

EDIT: Please don't say Blender because I've tried it before...

Way too complicated.

I wouldn't call them bad for the effects. It's just pretty basic and annoying because you can tell it's WMM once you see it. Kinda like clip art.

I use WMM for my jokish video stuff because I'm poor and too lazy to pirate something else, but if I really wanted to make some videos...I'd probably dish out for something like Vegas

Here is a discussion thread from another forum where the OP lists a whole bunch of free compositing programs: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?117750-List-of-free-compositing-editing-tools

Also, After Effects gives you a free 30 day trial of the fully featured program with no autopay BS. So if you're super efficient, you could theoretically bang out your whole project before the trial ends

Nice!

To do it in the Marble Hornets style, just follow that tutorial, but visually work in reverse - take a strip of the video from above where you want the tear, then layer it [/i]over[/i] the original video at the bottom. That way, when it vanishes, the primary image doesn't "jump". (although if you do it cochino's way, you can exploit it to hide a tricky jump cut)

To make it even more extreme, move the "torn" layer forward or backward in the timeline so that the new video is offset from the primary video. This creates a very disorienting tear in both space and time.

Haha, I'd love to jump in and add some, but I don't have access to a decent computer right now, sadly.
