[?] Deven Dark email
Odd email I have just received - any ideas or just spam?

Quote:
Dear Friend,

For the past 17 days Deven Dark has blocked
my ability to power up the Guardians. I have
finally reestablished connection with the
remaining captive Guardians and will resume
powering them up immediately. Deven has
also hacked into my messaging system.
From this point forward I will only
communicate through secure email.
Deven's plan is coming into focus and
an intense threat is imminent, which
makes the powering up of all of the
Guardians even more urgent.
Dark's minions are still at large.
It is important that you all stay
on alert.

I will only reach out when it
is absolutely necessary.

(sorry for the double post)

Also, there is an image in the email of a masked man (almost like he is out of Halo). On the dark visor, reads:

Quote:
Code:
>>>ALERT.....
>>>LEVEL: 9
>>>>THREAT: The evil villain REFUSE is on the loose in D.C, and is planning an attack on The National Mail.
>>>TIME OF ATTACK: Within the next 48 hours.
>>>MISSION: Power up The Capital
>>>(Estimated Power up date 3-1-11)

That's... interesting...

"Deven Dark" pulled up this seemingly relevant article on NHL.com:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=551077

Quote:
Sunday, 01.30.2011 / 6:48 PM / The Guardian Project
By Dave Lozo - NHL.com Staff Writer
RALEIGH -- Fans at RBC Center were treated to a 10-minute laser-and-video show starring all 30 NHL Guardians during the second intermission of the 2011 All-Star Game presented by Discover.

Comics legend Stan Lee, who was the force behind The Guardian Project, introduced the sellout crowd to the Guardians and provided background into their history and super powers.

But things turned dangerous after the Guardians were unveiled, as the evil force out to destroy the Guardians known as Devin Dark interrupted and took control of the show. The Guardians appeared outside the arena on the big board, only to be sucked into the building by a devious device and trapped under the ice.

Fortunately for everyone involved The Hurricane, who received the biggest cheers, came to the rescue. He pulled the Guardians out of the ice to safety, seemingly bringing an end to the Guardian saga. It turns out it was just the beginning.

Devin Dark threatened revenge against the true leader of the Guardians, Mike Mason. His story line will be revealed in full as the story moves forward.

How will Devin Dark ever be defeated? Will the Guardians protect us?

Only time will tell.

Could very well be the start to the new NHL Guardians Stan Lee comic series...

Care to attach the image(s) from the email?

very brave of you to click on an attachment from an unknown source -- I don't automatically load embedded images in my preview pane either -- even something labeled as a .jpg could contain something ever so much worse. In this particular case, it looks like it was probably safe.

Depends on your program and in how much detail it explains the attachment. No filename? Danger. No extensions? Danger. Generally JPGs and other image formats are safe, but PDFs and other web-style files (html, js, etc) - Danger! Smile

Anyway, I think if we get any reports of the email being received by others, and it looks like a story is unfolding (rather than just an announcement of the series) this could be moved to N&R.

I'd bet there isn't a lot more in the way of a game. Any time the whole "Look what we did there. Did you see it? Just in case you didn't, look at [x]" equivalent of "Red six on the black seven." is used, it's just hopeful shotgun marketing.

You could take a screen shot of the window displaying your email, by using the "Print Screen" button (assuming your keyboard has one). Then you'll need to open an image editor and paste the capture into an image file, save it locally, then upload it to your next post (assuming you already know how). If you're more techno-savvy, you might view the source (HTML code) of the email and find the image tags embedded therein, and could link to them directly if they are still hosted on the internet.

Apologies for the possibly pointless thread necro, but I just got a third email a few days ago.

I blogged about my first "encounter" with the emails here, you can read about email number 3 here.

If this IS supposed to be an ARG of some sort, they're not very good at it. This is probably just your plain vanilla viral marketing, but it even fails on that front as people don't actually know what they're for without some Googling.

Because nobody seems to have posted the main site for the effort...

Backstory, Events, Bios, Graphis novel sales, blah, blah.
