That's the error page that you get when your Flash isn't up to date, I know, I get that from my work computer, which is using an ancient version of Flash.

Yeah, just like the above posts, it is displayed when you have an older Flash (or none at all):

Sorry, for some reason I couldn't link it as an attachment.

There are errors all over the place on that page!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
While many of you think 500rads/10cfr20 surmount to an Ethan Haas alternate universe ... I believe they were the beginning of this whole new viral spread. i.e. just "bumps" to official announcements and the sort. ... J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Peter Jackson and even George Lucas ALL started out shooting on Super 8mm movie film. I don't think "Super 8" is just going to be an homage to just Spielberg, I believe it is going to be an homage to ALL those films from the 60's/70's/80's that shaped the way we see films today. I would imagine the plot to surround those that "experimented" with that film structure and inadvertently captured various forms of reality (accidentally created: i.e. Big Foot, Loch Ness Monster, Aliens ... that sort of thing), and, while the big corporations who have been trying to hide/contain their mistakes, investigate/retrieve any and all known footage ... with horrifying consequences! I think the two blogs were created to get that "feel." IMO

Personally, I hope that "Super 8" does NOT take place in the 70's-80's ...
In order for it to have any scare factor (for myself), it would NEED to take place in the "here-and-now" as JAWS, Poltergeist, Jurassic Park, etc ... took place during the time periods in which they were created and released! They were scary then, but they are far from scary now.

So far, this "new viral" ... scariestthingieversaw ... seems VERY "RetroVertigo!"
... I was around when computers first crept their way into households!

It would be funny/creepy if the *DOS* download actually does something to make all followers become a part of the viral, in some way, as stated above!

Go get 'em, boys!!

DEQNA

I started looking for references to DEQNA - the translated hex code I posted on page 25 had a reference to "deqna.swf" (and thanks to Automaton for the explanation of why the tracking info would be in code). I thought that someone on the IRC chat had said that deqna is a free Flash converter or something, and kind of let it go at that. But, I'm wondering if that's going to be the next piece of info we see.

(Disclaimer: The blog that shall not be named got me to thinking about this, but that's largely irrelevant.)

Anyway, turns out that a DEQNA is a very old type of Ethernet adapter. From what I can tell, it was used on the PDP-11 - the kind of machine that we're apparently looking at over at scariestthingieversaw.com. See this page, and this page of specs and options on the PDP-11.

And, this is a hilarious reference to using a PDP-11 that you no longer care for, and a DEQNA card: How to Measure Nuclear Warhead Yield.

The only other reference to DEQNA that I can find is a name of some sort, perhaps from Malaysia.

Enjoy.

Yeah, that 's the second time a "guest" has chimed in with that particular piece of information. I have been all over that file and can find no link that will help us. Anyone else?

[EDIT] And since it's the second time... I'm willing to bet we haven't examined this as closely as we should.

I dunno, that would assume that we're looking at a real PDP-11 emulator, instead of Flash movie of one, no?

OK, looked through it, tried a bunch of commands instead of answering Y or N. Nothing happens, that I can see.

"Grass root" PMs might pull the stunt of providing hints through a guest account, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that these PMs will never resort to that.

A guest account posting a link without any explanation whatsoever, at least as far as this game is concerned, is something to be ignored in my book.

I gotta agree with Nighthawk.

I can understand having people who work for the viral interacting with fans, I mean hell, that's kind of what a viral IS. However, having those same workers drop hints as blatant and as "helpful" as what was posted is taking it a little too far.

The whole point of a viral marketing campaign is to both be mysterious in its presentation in order to hype people up for the end result, as well as rake in a lot of money when the final reveal is...well, revealed.

So, once again, I agree with Nighthawk. Those links posted by guests should be ignored.

Seriously, forealiously, if TPTB really wanted us to read through a text heavy manual for an old computer program that would lead to 2 things.

1. The game would be SO BORING no one would want to play it. What's next? Do 8th grade algebra homework in order to find a passcode? Then read War and Peace to find a website? I doubt anyone trying to make any type of "Game" would force players to do something so boring.

2. The link would be on the website.

The program running is just to place the game in time, we're in 2002 in the game it seems and initial information is "coming from" 1977. That is all we need to know, the game should be good enough to show us the rest.
