No game that I know of that used a PvP mechanic has ended well.

So, you didn't like Chain Factor (which let players decide on the ending through a PvP game mechanic).

It's difficult to do well, but it has been pulled off on occasion.

Worked well for me. I didn't expect who won that 'Project Zeit' PvP section, but it did allow me to determine what the playerbase wanted. The main problem with the PvP voting though was that it was rather...'out of place', the mechanics were fine though.

Also worth noting that The Beast had the vote on AI rights -- that pretty much means the mechanic has been in the developer's toolkit as long as the field was around. The challenge and danger is when that becomes the central mechanic or threatens a breakdown of communication.

OK, so I sorta misread...

I don't think that the terms "PvP" and "voting" go together in these examples. They are voting systems, yes, but I don't really consider them "PvP" in the traditional sense.

I was referencing the aspect of PvP specifically, where players are aggressively pitted against each other.

I'm kinda new to ARGs, so I don't know how often this is done, but I'd like to see some that combine. For instance, you have 2 (or more) games that then combine into one plotline at a certain point. The games have the same PMs and BTS guys, but different characters and plots (until they combine). That sounded less complicated in my head Very Happy

I'd love to see some kind of a smartphone app. I know that may be a bit much for smaller ARGs, but the ones run by the bigger companies should be able to pull it off.

Actually, a few months ago, we had an ARG that did that. It unfortunately ended after a while, but I'll post a link.

As lifegospel said, it does happen from time to time -- the first ARG I actively played, Deus City, merged with The Committee of the Sedulous Amalgamation -- interestingly, the merger occurred midway through both games, and was not initially intended to occur by either PM.

BTYC PVP

Nighthawk, Episode 4 of BTYC ended in pvp (with good outcome).

A group of player followed one NPC (that was the more obvious part) and another group decided to contact the "enemy" and were offer to help him. The final showdown were both group trying to hack a central server, one of them trying to give false lead to the other one. The first group to hack out the server locked out the other group (revealing the existence of a backdoor and who were on wich side)

That part was called "Trust no one"...

My ARG always have multiple level of play. The simple one (linear puzzle game), the second one (second set of deep hidden puzzle) and the third one (pvp with almost an ARG within and ARG) so you end up in full blown paranoia. Ask TexRipley. Wink

That said, what make a good ARG is the same as a good tabletop RPG event: at the end of the day it's your players.
