i know that the person above made a walkthrough of sorts.

but for the part that i am on (dot matrix), i kinda would like a BETTER explanation of the puzzle from anyone. because i've done everything that a lot of other people said that they did, and even what the walkthrough poster said that i was supposed to do, but i'm not getting the right result.

as helpful as the walkthrough is, i would like to be able to do the puzzle RIGHT. if anyone understands it, went through the process, and doesn't mind explaining, would you PM me or something?

Assuming you're referring to this puzzle:
http://www.thefirstdoor.co.uk/TheFirstDoor/DotMatrix/BridgeOfSighs.htm

You're supposed to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
replace each line on the image with binary, where dot's are 1's and spaces/unfilled dots are 0's, but for some inexplicable reason this will only turn into nonsence if you turn the binary into ascii characters.
I only got the answer by reading the walkthrough on the previous page also - that each sequence of binary is missing a leading 0. I suppose you could figure it out because each sequence contains 7 dots, and ascii works in bytes of 8 bits. From there it is technically possible to assume you're supposed to add a leading 0, since no alphanumeric characters in the ascii table start with 1xxxxxxx.

Even so, though, someone like myself with a moderate understanding of binary and ascii never made that connection, and so anyone with any less experience with binary never would, and I doubt anyone with more would be much more likely to either.

To be frank, this entire puzzletrail is badly designed - what they planned to be "the clues all in one place rather than all over" ended up turning out to be "not enough clues at all."

I wouldn't advise trying to enjoy this puzzletrail as a puzzletrail, but it can be fairly amusing to give each page a try before looking at the answer, just to realise the crazy leaps in imagination that the designer(s) thought people could make without reading minds.

alright. thank you very much, DLT!

i added the zeros like the page before said, but i keep getting jibberish no matter what text converter i use. i even did binary to hex, and then hex to text, with no luck. i guess i'll just be using the answer then.

in your opinion, what are some well designed puzzletrails? i've only ever finished one. and all the others that i've seen involve giant mind leaps as well... at least, it seems like that to me. but then again, i'm not sure if i'm very good at them yet.. is there a good one in your opinion that would be good for training?

The puzzle works as 8-bit ASCII (Extended ASCII) if you add the leading zeroes and use this translator:
http://home2.paulschou.net/tools/xlate/

But the designer likely intended that the puzzler do the first part as 7-Bit ASCII (Standard ASCII).

ASCII 1963
ASCII 1965
and
ASCII 1967
would all give the same result.

Well, so far I have looked up Countdown as a song in Google and came up with

The Final Countdown

I typed it in as an answer. It told me I was very close, but I didn't type in everything. Hope this helps.
