That looks interesting. If they are planing to make huge marketing campaign, I'm in. But, please no more canceled ARGs, dear ABC. Even if financial crisis and stuff... Elsewise you're gonna loose your audience.

Did some research about the Variety site and understand the issue there now. This type of infection comes from third-party ads that appear in the same place on the page in a cycle. That's why one site visitor gets a warning and the next one doesn't. So kudos to Avast for catching this one.

edited, but i sincerely doubt variety did that on purpose, next someone will tell me CNN or Amazon is going to give me a virus.

it being third party ad malware makes more sense
