Also, if I remember correctly, someone timestamped the blog as having started in 2005--I don't think Sebastian was planning on running this ARG for four years.

Hi everyone... I've just been kinda lurking through this one. And I haven't noticed anyone mentioning a link on the author's site for the "study"...
Is that link something new? Or just not relevant to this..? Just thought I'd mention it. http://www.alznerexperiment.com/

edit** it would be great if it was in English!!

dav, the author of "therapy" used himself as a character in a previous arg - so, my spec on dana king is that sebastian's using another real world writer
this time. yeah, dana has a blog and been tooling away at it since 04 cuz he's real. (& yeah, could be a random mailing - time will tell)

looking forward to the email - might keep me from falling down random holes Wink

I don't understand why I got this same email. From my understanding of spamgourmet, that "1" means the address will only work for a single message forward before it self-destructs. It kind of pisses me off to get an invitation to participate via an avenue that will most likely be closed by the time I reply. My first instinct was to post it as an update to Despoiler but now I sort of feel like "what's the point?"

Y'know, I have a sneaky suspicion that we don't just have one question, and that it's possibly one question for each recipient of this particular email. It's difficult to tell because the email's pretty vague, but there's no harm in trying, right?

From P.Martin, in answer to the question "How do we get in contact with the people from the tape?" -

Quote:
You are in charge: All you need to do is putting together the parts.

I'm listening to the tapes again. In the Julia one that varin got, it sounds to me like it begins with a gunshot. Any ideas on what that first loud bang is? Where it sounded like, "How about you fix me up with a room" I think she says gun instead of room but I could be wrong. Thoughts?

The noise you're talking about sounds like a train to me.

I cut this off the beginning when I posted before because it just sounded like a buzz, but now that I listened again... I swear I can hear voices near the end...

I'm hearing "The first thing I ever wrote was a short story for a competition." Maybe just a glitch and some bleed over from later on in your tape?

First letters of each line, as spoken.

moaifniistwhwthfahwpatwisi 1/1
twiynjjunwbpjdsnjaiym 1/2
wihwioiathwwswooinsfisi 2/1
ioyywihsipwswiaoctwwwa 3/1

Doing some simple ROTs give some words, but are a bit short and inconclusive, I think?

Lots of conversation on IRC but no solutions. "You're in charge" - perhaps there was something with the batteries or the spot to plug in? At least on mine, nothing interesting. Rowan assembled the transcripts we have so far on http://www.wonderweasels.org/charlotte/guide.html. Thebruce got a tape and will post information about it when he has a chance. The email response I got was not seemingly an answer to the question I asked at all. Wheels turning but no progress!

Looking at the SpamGourmet site again today, it occurs to me that there may be an exploitable window to send a few more emails to PM. Here's how these disposable addresses are constructed:

Quote:
3. After you have confirmed your protected address, you can give out self-destructing disposable email addresses whenever you want. The disposable addresses are like:

someword.x.userSPLATspamgourmet.com

where someword is a word you have never used before, x (optional) is the number of email messages you want to receive at this address (up to 20, and the number 3 will be used if you leave it out), and user is your username.

Since the email address we were messaged from contained a numeral "1" in the center position, it was only good for one reply before self-destructing. But it still told us the username chosen by PM and that means we can construct more of them.

Quote:
For example, if your user name is "spamcowboy", and BigCorp wants you to give them your email address (on the web, on the phone, at a store - it doesn't matter), instead of giving them your protected address, give them this one:

frombigcorp.3.spamcowboySPLATspamgourmet.com
(and frombigcorp.spamcowboySPLATspamgourmet.com will work the same way)

This disposable email address will be created here the first time BigCorp uses it (you don't have to do anything to create it), and you'll receive at most 3 messages, forwarded to your protected address. The rest will be indelicately consumed.

All we likely need is a unique word for the starting position but it is also possible that the account has "watch words" set up.

Quote:
Watchwords help you control the creation of disposable addresses. If you have watchword enforcement turned on and at least one watchword, then the system will not create a new address unless one of your watchwords is included in the "word" of the address. For example, if your username was 'spamcowboy', and your watchword list includes 'saddle' and 'rope', then these forms will work to create new addresses:

saddlesoap.3.spamcowboySPLATspamgourmet.com
GitARope.2.spamcowboySPLATspamgourmet.com
backinthesaddleagain.6.spamcowboySPLATspamgourmet.com

and these will not:
coyote.20.spamcowboySPLATspamgourmet.com
eternalspamnation.*.spamcowboy@spamgourmet.com

Even if we assume watchwords are in use, this should be easily overcome by simply including the entire original "unique" word concatenated with some other unique word of our choosing, appended to the rest of the email address. The email I received was sent by "iwillgiveyou.1.littlehint@spamgourmet.com," so I should be able to send an email successfully (unless they've abandoned the spamgourmet account) by sending to something like "iwillgiveyouSpaceBass.20.littlehint@spamgourmet.com" up to twenty times (20 being the maximum allowed number of forwards).

Want to ask some more questions? Anyone can make an address and start sending.
