Published Cloverfield Screenplay by Drew Goddard. Analysis.
WARNING: Spoilers for people, who haven't already seen the movie.

Hi people, as I've already mentioned, I was in Japan this november.

And I finally bought the book I've looking for many months - the screenplay to Cloverfield, by Drew Goddard. Well, in Japanese. This is authorized novelization by Shin Iruma, who already wrote book about LOST.

Book data wrote:

235 pages
ISBN-10: 481243436X
ISBN-13: 978-4812434369

Well, don't ask me why, but the book was in Japanese, and as far as I know, it's only published screenplay to Cloverfield worldwide. OK, it's novelization. I don't know, why this screenplay wasn't published in English till now.

Anyway, let's analyze the book. I this thread I will post some scans by the book and I'll try to translate some key scenes.

Because some our observations are textually fixed there like "falling object at the end of the movie".

OK, let's go, the book looks like this way:

I posted it also in German in my blog
http://merzmensch.blogspot.com/2008/12/cloverfield-screenplay-by-drew-goddard.html

and with this label you will find the whole analysis of the book I'll do next weeks
http://merzmensch.blogspot.com/search/label/cloverfield-screenplay

In my next entry I'll open the book with you, people Smile

Japanese books are really cool designed. They have not only contents part and cover, but also an obi-strip, an information strip, kinda teaser about contents of the books. Here is the Cloverfield-obi-strip

After we analysed the obi-strip of the book, let's look to its dust jacket.

Blurb
(if you haven't visited Cloverfieldclues.com recently, 'cause Dennis was cool to provide a google-translation link to the amazon.co.jp-description of the book. The texts are identical. Well, here is my human made translation) :

Quote:
New York, a Downtown apartment. Rob decided to take a work place in Japanese Company "Tagruato", so he invited his friends to grand farewell party. All guests congratulate Rob to his new post. But Robs heart trembles in presence of Beth, who has been his good friend from the student times, and with whom he shares his secret memories and feelings. Suddenly also ground of Manhattans trembles. Party guests watch the tv news about the catastrophic situation, and to assure themselfes they age going upstairs on the roof of the house. They become witnesses of a gigantic explosion as between the skyscraper a fire ball is growing. Rob and his friends hurry in panic down on the streets while everywhere the electricity outage spreads itself. They mix up in the crying crowds, and hear an uncanny loud roaring. Something not closely definable tramples along the streets of New York. What will happen to the fates of these people, who were put in into such extreme situation?

The mysterious world of "Cloverfield", beeing covered in a veil of secrets is revealed now.

OK, let's see some notes:

* Interesting is, that Tagruato is finally very officially mentioned in connection with Cloverfield
* The reason, why Rob is going to Japan, was not so clear in the ominous teaser of the movie. But in the teaser of the book it is very clearly defined (Work for Tagruato).
* Robs trembeling heart is ehm, cliché-ridden, almost kitsch. But in the context of the later happenings I find this analogy (Robs quaking heart <=> Manhattans quaking Earth) very poetic.

Well.

If we however open the dust jacket and look inside, we will understand, what was meant with

Quote:
In Japan never published photos on the inside of cover...

OK, without any comments, let's enjoy it.

SUMMARY. After all, this book seems to have a tendence not to concern about monster, but rather to tell about the single human fates.

P.S. Better image qualities in my blog Smile

Not just a nice pic of clover.. but an iconic one.
That pic should have been all over the post release advertising.

Once the mystery part is gone, give people a good look at it. The pic would have definitely drawn my attention to whatever they needed. (DVD, coffemugs, t-shirts, etc)

Be a good teaser poster for the sequal

After we opened the dusk jacket, the cover of the book appears before us like it's a materialized trailer screen capture:

Copyright: Paramount Pictures & TA-KE Shobo Entertainment Books, 2008

Well, let's open the book. After the classic Cloverfield poster on the first page there are many colored images from the movie. I suppose, we know all of them, so I won't post them here. Just one example for main comprehension (I intentionally didn't scan it properly, due of some paranoic copyright fears Wink ):

Copyright: Paramount Pictures & TA-KE Shobo Entertainment Books, 2008

Note the layout of the pictures, it looks like the layout of the http://www.1-18-08.com/ images - with another backrgound.

There are 23 images and they spoil many things: you see HUD, lying in grasses of Central Park, you even see many pictures of a monster. So one more time it indicates the message of the book: not the mystery around the monster, but the description of people fates.

Well, let's flip the page and look the picture index:

Chapter 12

Chapter 13

Epilogue p. 227

Translator's afterword p. 232

We see interesting structure of the book after all. And there are two Chapters, which aren't really in the movie: Prologue and Epilogue.

And the most interesting thing is, in these chapters appears new character. But I'll tell about her next time.

P.S. As always, better picture quality in my blog:
http://merzmensch.blogspot.com/2008/12/cloverfield-screenplay-by-drew-goddard_26.html
On your request I'll post in my blog all 23 pictures.

I agree, fantastic Clover pic! It would have made a kickass cover for the manga too...
