I'd say more a play on the ball of yarn - Ariadne gave Thesus a ball of yarn so that he wouldn't get lost in the minotaur's maze.

totally wild, random spec - someone stole an olympic ring replica that'll be used in the closing ceremonies, replacing it with..something..like a disguised virus canister or bioweapon, and everyone at the olympic closing ceremonies (from around the world) gets infected, thus eventually spreading it worldwide.
Unless we stop it of course
Smile heh

thanks kstar... have you checked inside the yarn ball for a little fortune-style piece of paper? I'm assuming there should be one in there...

And it seems this photo we both received...

You're right! Smile I've found a piece of paper:

You will soon discover an alternate reality. The adventrure begins when you meet Ariadne. www.findthelostring.com

and

You will soon discover how the world works.

Wow that is crazy - I was just reading about that in a book I am starting on the Heroes journey! (Heroes - save the Cheerleader?) ok stretching it - but still a funny coincidence Wink

Anyone know when we get to meet Ariadne?

Both of your photos, myf and kstar, to the best of what I could read are

XAALN032, RAAIM056, and XAAAN024 (or something)

kstar - RAAIM072, RAAIM060 (or something)

if you could both actually get those IDs, that might help to record who's got what photos (/me jumps back into the eldritch errors trailhead book page photo tracking mode =P)

hah MrToasty, I thought you were kidding until I looked up the definition too Smile neat!

oh and kstar, did you check back of the little yarn note? There should be another message.
Mine was "You will soon have the answer to someone else's problem"
and myf's was "You will soon encounter a puzzling situation"

Updated. Smile Sorry, I'm increasingly distracted. I've too many other things on my mind.

So thus far we have:
- Berlin, Germany
- UK
- USA

Is this right?

I think we should start locating the places in the photos.

And nice catch on the connection Adriadne, the ball of yarn, and the minotaur's maze, btw!

Oops! Sorry thebruce. Wink

- Germany
- UK
- Canada

I'm guessing - and may be wrong - that cities are not that important as they're targeting players... or maybe they're targeting this particular players for their cities. If so, for reference, we have:
- Berlin, Germany
- Kitchener, Ontario, Canada
- ?, UK

EDITed to prevent double posting: it occured me that the lost ring might be a reference to the 5 rings that compose the symbol of the olympics.

Does anyone recognize any of the pictures as NOT related to the 1920 Antwerp Games?

EDIT: "Related to". Not necessarily AT.

For instance, the two girls on the diving board are Aquatics teammates Helen Wainwright and Aileen Riggin Soule, taken in Manhattan, NY before the 1920 Olympics.

Edit2: Don't know what I was thinking.
Last Edit (I swear) They are all from the 1920 Antwerp Games.

I don't know much about whois searches, but when I tried making one, in several sites I came up with this:

Again, I don't know if I did it right or am interpreting it right, but that "Thursday" registrant strikes me as odd.

EDIT: I've re-read the thread and noticed thebruce had already written that the olympics would end on the 24th of August, as I said a few posts behind. How come nobody trouted me? Smile By the way, where does this ARG term come from?

It looks like I got the same thing, except the outside of my package's handwritten message was: "follow this clew 03.03.08" and the postcard images are different.

To see the images all huge 'n' stuff, go here.

Also: Woo! Very Happy
