Question

Is this game about drugs and beer? Should my 9 year old be playing it? Thank you. Marcie

No, No, possibly not.

SL deals with some mature concepts and situations, including but not limited to hostage situations, kidnapping, negotiation, possible murder, art appreciation, and depending on who you talk too, foul language.

However, most of those can be easily avoided by simply not participating. In my personal opinion, no, your 9 year old shouldnt be playing.

Given that most of those who take part are either late teens or adults, some conversations we have are very inapropriate for a 9 year old to be involved with.

I suggest that, unless you will not be allowing said child to participate in chats with other players, that you not let them play at all.

This is not even really a game- it deals with heavy thoughts, ideas, and situations that a 9 year old probably can't handle. I mean, I can hardly handle it, at 18.

You and your child could play together?

... and some 35 year olds. That is one of the reasons I've become even less active in SL. The family comes first... then work... then fun.

Silverladder has some wonderfu messages to share, and a few are dark.

Here is my suggestion if you would like to have your child participate.

!. Preview the card being revealed first, and make your decision on participating that week from there. Every week/card will be different, hey all have different stories/messages to convey.

2. Do not allow your child or participate in Vent or IRC. Many times, those venues are not PC or child friendly due to converstion content.

3. I also am not sure that MySpace is a good place for them either. Most times, relevant bullitens are posted here if you want to catch them and forward the info to your child.

4. Preview the forums as well, the ocassional f-bomb will work it way in.

Silverladder CAN be appropriate as say a "SilverLadder Light" version. The key is , like anything on the internet, over see, preview and censor accordingly.

There are many passengers who participate without using the forums, irc, or vent.

My best suggestion would be to email Domenic (twoofdiamondssplatsilverladder.com) Let him know that you are thinking of including your child on a limited basis, and ask him each week before the reveal if HE thinks the subject matter will be appropriate for the coming week.

I do this with my 12 yr old to an extent. If I think the site is approriate, I let her surf that card and look it over. She hasn't been "playing" actively, but it has spawned a few conversations between us that we may not have otherwise had.

Hope this helps!

What's the matter with being serious about taking an interest in their child's internet activity? A friend of mine started going to barbecue sites a few years ago. It started innocently enough, just checking out charcoal grills a few times a week. By the time his parents caught wind of his activities, he was subscribing to various sites, reading BBQ magazines, buying various sauces and smokehouse flavours... He eventually got into propane, exotic cuts of meat, and outlandish grilling techniques that were neither safe, nor normal for a omnivorous boy his age.

Barbecue ruined his life.

Bravo, Marcie, for taking the time to make sure your child is safe from the influences and savage practices of the internet.

God Bless.
