Well that explains why they only sent it people who filled out the survey incompletely or with bogus info.

OK...some of you "freaks" must have your brains hard-wired in a completely different way than mine, 'cause I would have never been able to figure that one out in a million years!

You gotta admit, that's pretty funny.

can someone explain this to me? How was this calculated? That is, how does 1103 become 83? And how was it determined that this was the thing to do? It's all beyond me. Thanks.

Since we're only using the numbers 0 to 3, cherold, we can safely say that this is a base 4 puzzle. What that means is that, to change the numbers into base-10, you have to do a little bit of arithmetic.

Let's say you have a 4-digit base-4 number represented by the digits wxyz. To change it into a base 10 number, we do (w*4^3)+(x*4^2)+(y*4^1)+(z*4^0).

Let's take the base-4 number 1103, for example.

(1*4^3)=64
(1*4^2)=16
(0*4^1)=00
(3*4^0)=03

Add those 4 numbers up and you get 83, which is the numbers base-10 representation.

Now, ASCII is a numbers and letters system designed to give all computer keys and symbols a numerical value. I don't know how they decided what letter, number or symbol got what...it's probably just a little bit arbitrary. But if you go find an ASCII key, you can change those numbers into letters and get the phrase shown above.

How was this figured out? Part guesswork, part intuition, as most things are. If you see that you've got a code that only uses a few of the digits (0 or 1 to some number less than 9), then it's probably a base puzzle. If you've got a group of numbers that you think may translate into letters, and all fall somewhere between 32 (the ASCII code for a space) and 122 (lower case z) or so, then it might very well be an ASCII puzzle.

If you want to see a base puzzle that's a bit easier than this one, go to this thread over at the Chasing the Wish boards. We just solved one.
