[trailhead] smithy111110

Thomas Bookmore writes that Usenet group rec.puzzle received the following message today:
Quote:
Hello, guys, name's Smithy. Well, the name's Jethro Smythe-Smith - please don't ask about my parents - but Smithy is so much more dignified.

I was wondering if some of you could help me out. While I'm a greedy, clever son-of-a-bitch of an entrepeneur, I'm not very good at figuring out codes and messages. I'd ask my close friends to help me out, but, to be honest, I don't have any. It's not because of my personality - I'm just in and out of a lot of cities, looking for the ocassional odd job, and I usually don't like to stay in any one town for a long period of time. My closest friend is my laptop, portable scanner and ISP account.

Anyway, it's a lot faster to tell you what's going on here at my Flickr account.

Thanks in advance,

Smithy

Said Flickr account has a healthy dose of visual kloos.

Got a solve on the numbers, which makes the photo make a lot more sense.

Hint:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There's a big clue on the inverse side of the library card...

Method:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Inverse log each of the numbers to work out the original number (round to the nearest integer). e.g. invlog 0.00 = 1, which is A.

Answer:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Flagstaff, which is right in the centre of Page, Albuquerque, Phoenix and LA.

Have mailed smithy11110 as it's been years since I got a solve on anything ever Wink Hope we hear back soon...

p.s. bookmore says "hi" Smile

I had to give up and treat myself to Scribe's spoiler - which, gladly enough, turned out to be something completely out of my reach !

Now that this first puzzle has been taken out of the way (and that the flickr account updated,, let's see what else we can get from the documents we were given.

locationpic1 : Ow, my eyes. terrible picture of road signs somewhere in the USA, one pointing to the towns of Page and Albuquerque, the other towards Phoenix and Los Angeles. The series of signs of top makes me think we should be able to figure out where it is by following one of these roads until we come to a "decision point" that fits the ensemble of signs.

letter1 : It *seems* to be dated September the 24th, 1878. A quick search about a Kirk Mayzley doesn't return results yet on my end, is anyone luckier ?

Miskatonic - for the prolly rare few that don't know this name, take some time to read this : quite relevant with the fact that Uriah Tettleson was/is a doctor.

And no, Uriah Tettleson didn't return anything...Again, anyone got more luck, let us know !

Here's a Google Map of the 4 locations, plus where smithy is headed to:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=114419095799788307853.00043ed00f48a521f271d

I'm assuming the photo was taken from this destination...

Oh, I also got an e-mail back from Smithy. It doesn't seem to have much in it, but you never know what might turn out to be a clue further down the road, so here it is:
Quote:
Woo hoo! I'm on my way to Flagstaff! Just got to get my finances in order - no easy prospect at this point and time, unfortunately.

Smithy

He sounds happy, I like that Smile

Sounds like we get a nice little break for now, anyway.

Does this mean then that it is a fictional game within the lovecraft universe?

For now, i think we will have to sit tight, and wait for more.
by the way, Bookmore, your link to the road sign picture isnt working.

Another pic posted, see http://www.flickr.com/photos/19937708@N03/2003080040/

LAM? My first thought is airport codes, but don't see how that fits with the rest of the text there. Still, talk of invoking things is always, uh, interesting fun Wink

And thanks for the map, A_champion! Especially useful for those of us with absolutely no knowledge of the geography of the states at all... Also, it does seem odd that he (Smithy) is mentioning all those places to us, so maybe they'll come in handy some time.

Yay, reminds me of my old Cthulhu-roleplaying days!

Made a (very very) quick search through the mortal characters of the Mythos and didn't find any whose name would eventually match LAM as initials. Same thing for cults. Including wikipedia article about the semitic character Lam or Lamed just in case. Will continue searching later !

Man, seems worth checking the flickr account fairly regularly - here's another one:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/19937708@N03/2003619661/

It's an ex-confidential document from the ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence) in the 1940s, with various text scrubbed out. Text reads as follows:
Quote:
TOP SECRET CONFIDENTIAL

It has come to this office's attention that DR. URIAH TETTLESON, under ONI surveillance since 1903, met with one (- over a line blanked out -), for unknown reasons.

This office requests instructions for further actions in regard to

Ack, Scribe beat me to it xD

More thoughts on LAM : we have two characters whose name (partly) fits these initials - "Andrew" and "Mayzley". By the way, do you think "Andrew" ever found Tettleson, and went to the post office to pick up his "gift" ?
