Email from Michael Acton Smith

I just recieved this email from michael acton smith (michaelSPLATactonsmith.com) in response to sending an email asking the nature of a clue. They directly reference the c.v. I sent to senteSPLATprojectsyzygy.com:
.v

"Hi Jamie

Nice find. Wish I could go into more detail but I hope you understand we
need to keep things pretty quiet for the moment.

Thanks for your application which we received over the weekend.

Cool site by the way.

We'll be in touch.

M"

Don't mean to get anyones hopes up as to anything core to this thread; just wanted to say hello. New to all this jazz but looking forward to it. Reading all the threads it strikes me how much i have to learn (you guys are damn fast). All i can think of that i really have to offer seems duplicated by so many of you; i'm England based as is Syzygy, so maybe that may count for me.

Still lets see what happens.

Nice to have you onboard. Don't worry about the speed thing, as I posted in the precrime topic sometimes it's just a question of who's first of the mark in running an applet. This in turn can be determind by time-zone or even the order in which emails arrive in your inbox. You soon begin to get the feel for things. Have a look in the resources topic for links to a number of online solvers. Personally, I perfer puzzles that make you think a bit rather than brute force solves. Enjoy.

KLOO

I recieved this today as a comment on my blog http://www.semioclast.com from someone calling themselves "Sweborg," which, as you may remember from The Beast was a clue leading to Coroner Sweborg at www.coronersweb.org.

"In the quest for truth
Disregard the distractions
Look for direction"

The ID info is as follows:

Commenter's name: Sweborg
Email: sweborgSPLATcoroner.org
Website: http://www.coroner.org
Post IP Address: 168.143.113.150

A quick check of the IP reveals little but a Google of "Coroner Sweborg" reveals http://www.google.com/search?q=coroner+sweborg&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 THIS.

All signs point to this thing being live, guys.

Coroner Sweborg was not a clue to coronersweb.org, it was simply cloudmaker idiocy, IIRC. Once the chemistry puzzle was solved, the answer was CORONERSWEBORG. The Cloudmakers immediately thought "Coroner Sweborg!" but it was actually just a clue to go to www.coronersweb.org. So, the fact that the commenter posted as Coroner Sweborg, a phrase that can be found in google, does not prove the game is live, it just proves whoever posted the comment knew his CM history.

Yes, but doesn't "and that is about a big a hint as you're going to get" and "Look for comments. Look for direction" mean that something is live?

This is hilarious: we have to sort-of-solve Dan and Adrian's comments to sort-of-figure-out if there is anything to be solved in the game yet.

I got that autoresponse that yanka mentioned earlier from the "just want to play the game" address. It seems like there are some interesting things in the headers (I'm the emagicu person):

1) "Curiouser and curiouser" is from Alice in Wonderland, right?
2) Was the "from:" field forged? I don't know much about this, but that's what it seems like, since the address only appears in that one field. Weird. Why would they do that?
3) Is there any significance to nobodySPLATknife.dreamhost.com? All I've gotten is that Dreamhost is a webhosting company.

Just to get things straight in my head...
Quote:
<AdrianHon> Look for comments. Look for direction.

Then a comment IS found:
Quote:
"In the quest for truth
Disregard the distractions
Look for direction"

And yet whilst being told to look for direction:
Quote:
<danhon> You know, I just thought Pareidolia was a cool word.

Pareidolia is finding incorrectly finding meaning in something which is a natural random occurence. But i didn't stop thinking there because the log continues:
Quote:
[16:16] <danhon> I'm just sayin'.
[16:16] <danhon> I'll lurk in there, then
[16:16] <AnthraX101> Heh
[16:19] <danhon> (and that is about a big a hint as you're going to get)

Is it just an innocent answer saying that danhon will be in #unfiction, or that he will lurk in pareidolia.
Or is this just pareidolia, another wrong direction and nothing has gone live yet. i hope somethings moving, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Or a sygyr.

From #syzygy:

Quote:
<danhon> There are as yet still no breakthroughs in #syzygy
<Lou|work> so I'll assume that I'm barking up the wrong tree...
<danhon> There's a tree
<danhon> You should continue barking

I think that settles it: there is something to look for.

After clicking on the link to www.coronersweb.org in "guest's" post, I found that it redirects to an eBay search for "startac." If one old AI Game site can redirect, why not the others? Since we are to "look for direction" and the Hon brothers are two of the most notorious AI Game players, I looked through the rest of the sites listed at the Trail and here's what I found:

coronersweb.org -> eBay search for "startac": http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?ht=1&query=startac&krd=1&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaEndSort
familychan.org -> eBay search for "hangers": http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=hangers&krd=1&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort
katenei.com -> band called "Zillionaire" website: http://www.zillionaire.net/
polipulse.com -> actually not a redirect, but the personal website of "Bill Hunt": http://www.polipulse.com/

Several also redirect to a porn site (I'll spare the URL due it being very NSFW). Those include donu-tech.com, rogueretrieval.com, and martinswintondesigns.com.

Several others redirect to generic web squatters of the "sponsored links" variety.

One non-AI Game site redirects to what looks like an auction that has ended. I got there from clicking on the "Sweborg" link for the author of the "In the quest for truth/Disregard the distractions/Look for direction" haiku comment at Semioclast.com (http://www.semioclast.com/archives/000287.html). That link is supposed to be http://www.coroner.org, but it redirects to http://www.sitelance.com/cgi-bin/domainauction/auction/auction.pl?category=medical&item=1072019521. Doing some snooping, I found that auction was for the domains "coroner.org" and "coroners.net" (http://www.sitelance.com/cgi-bin/domainauction/auction/auction.pl?action=dispallclosed2&DISPCLOSED=medical1072019521.dat).

Once again, I have no idea what to make of any of this. Just sharing information and thinking out loud.

Update

There is now a "#pareidolia" chat room on chat-solutions.org. The topic is "ceci n'est pas un pareidolia", which translates to "this is not a pareidolia."

1) Yep
2) Could be, could not be. It is so very easy to forge headers, and some software kind of blurs the header-forging lines (discussion lists, for instance). It is likely a real address, whether somebody at a keyboard typed the message or a piece of software kicked back an autoresponse.
3) Dreamhost is a web and shell provider (that I use and happily recommend to anyone and everyone). nobodySPLATknife.dreamhost.com is a dummy account they have for things like email discussion lists, autoresponders, and announcement lists. There is probably no significance there.
