Well, I figured it would give new players something to aim for
Actually, a lot depends whether you look at it in Explorer or Firefox. In IE you get the full caption at the bottom of the pop-up, with a plug from me about how I bought my first cards from Firebox. Keeps everyone happy, keeps the PR wheels oiled.
But in Firefox (at least for me here at home) the caption cuts off after the first line so it looks like I'm boasting - ha ha, I won. Not very happy about that at all.

I'm looking at it in FF2, and it looks fine from here

The good/bad news is that some lucky blighter solved Season One of Perplex City in February 2007 and pocketed all that lovely loot. Ah, that would be me... and since I first got involved by buying a starter pack from Firebox, I thought I'd drop by and say 'thanks'! Here's a picture of the Cube once we dug it up and got it home.

Cool. I did email them, so maybe they fixed it. Or maybe it was just me.
*is relieved*

quick question (maybe) -
how did you know where it was? i've never come across any clues. did you just wake up go "ahh, its in this area!"
to be honest, i thought it was in a place where everybody had a chance of finding it, not just the people who lived in that county.
that is all.
well done
what are you going to spend the money on?

Rand0m has spun this marvelous tale for us in one of the other forums, but I'm not as adept as some people, so I have no idea how to link to it.
As for hiding the cube in a place where everybody had a chance of finding it...they did. Any physical hiding place on Earth is going to require some amount of travel for 98% of the people out there. If they hid it in Nebraska, all the european players (and others) would be forking out airfare. If they hid it in the bottom of the Panama Canal...well, it'd be one very long season.
That's why I, personally, am really hoping Season 2 involves multiple physical objectives, perhaps to be used together once located, allowing people on different parts of the globe to be able to more reasonably take the game offline.

I'd just like to add my voice of thanks to Random for his execellent description of his journey to finding the cube. As I actually live in Northamptonshire I decided to take a trip earlier today to Wakerley Woods and with the descriptions given easily found my way to the hole dug by Rand0m. I guess it was kind of the end of a journey for me, a surprising one as I always assumed the cube would be located in some far flung corner of the world and not virtually on my doorstep. It was kind of fun walking throught the woods and seeing the dog walkers and like blissfully unaware of the drama that had unfolded in this spot.
I'd like to with all good luck with season 2 and never assume that the final solution won't lead to your backyard !

So if I see someone carrying a large bag and shovel into the forest in the woods a field away from my house here in Indiana, I should investigate immediately.
...actually, I'd probably investigate immediately even if Perplex City didn't exist...

Oh, now, I see that all the time and I'm in Indiana. Then again, I'm in Terre Haute, and you're out in the country.
No, WEST Terre Haute would be the same thing. I'm actually in something resembling a city.

Many congratulations to Rand0m and thanks for his (rather damp) End of the Line card which is now sitting proudly on our mantlepiece.
Sadly we got to the right spot the day after Rand0m having wasted too much time in Fineshade. We eventually concluded that the amino acid clue was giving us FEARLESS and GOOD which are the names of 2 of the Dukes of Burgundy (between 2 BOLDS). Since Wakerley is the Wood known for its Duke of Burgundy butterflies, we refocussed our search for quadrupeds to there, but alas too late!
We still don't know if our reading of the amino acid clue was correct - any comments gratefully received.

FEARLESS and GOOD sounds elegant actually. Rand0m, care to confirm?
I still don't know how the amino acid string becomes fearless and good though.

Bingo! FEMARLEMSSGQQD is indeed a pointer to the Dukes of Burgundy, and therefore Wakerley Wood via the butterflies (or so MC told me, don't go thinking I was clever enough to spot it).
The Qs are really Os, and the words 'fearless' and 'good' leap out at once. The two 'M's are a little more subtle - they could be said to be 'bold' because (according to Duckie on the Perplexorum where they were incredibly close to cracking it) they were highlighted in 'flying'. The whole thing - fearless, good, bold - is intended to be entered into Google ('cos ain't that what we always do first?) and give us the Dukes. After that, I guess we have to find the butterfly / woods link ourselves.
Nice one.
And I'm glad the card has found a good home - I was back there earlier today for a look-around and wondered what happened to it in the end. Was it you who put the wooden marker there? If so, nice touch

Dare I say not a single yank had the smallest chance of ever figuring that one out?

I dunno, though. Isn't it all a mix of the Library of Babel, brainpower and Google, especially if you're cross-referencing it with another clue already leading to the Jurassic Way? I remember being quietly amused at MC's cynicism / realism when I found they'd deliberately concocted a clue which would produce the required information on first page of Google results.

As extra confirmation (when we were meant to be doing it, rather than now we have MC confirmation), "BOLD FEARLESS GOOD" fits into the 4/8/4 pattern we were given at the end of Flying.
