The Pentagon looks at MMORPGs

from the Washington Post today...
" A Pentagon-sponsored group called the Highlands Forum met this week to discuss what are known as "Massively Multiplayer Online Games." These games, which can allow several million people to play, are among the hottest new trends in the Internet world, and they may have some fascinating uses in fighting terrorist networks."

Discuss.

The idea that online communities would be well suited to fighting against terrorism has been floating around the ARG community for quite some time now; I guess the big thing is that the Pentagon is taking the idea seriously now, which is good. I am intrigued by the idea of converting the military and intelligence agencies into online communities, though; that's an application which never came to my mind before. And as the article says, if nothing else, it would make wargames more realistic.

Think there's an equal market for a CD/UF like collaboration within the existing intel communities, to allow for realtime sharing of files and information. In fact, such things were done during the india/pakistan stand off earlier in the calendar year, US submarines in the Indian Ocean were communicating in real time over an IRC equivalent in CIPRnet via satellite internet.

Cool, huh?
