Look, Up In The Sky: Vanishing Point Game Skywriters @ San Jose Mercury News

Look, Up In The Sky: Vanishing Point Game Skywriters

Dean Takahashi, 09:00 AM in Dean Takahashi, Gaming

If you're reading this post exactly at 9 am and you live in certain cities, look out your window to see if you can see some skywriting airplanes overhead.

In Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami, and Sidney, Australia, Microsoft's Vanishing Point alternate reality game will drop some more clues in real life. Skywriters are going to leave more clues in the puzzle quest that will enable a lucky winner to fly into space in a Rocketplane vehicle.

I know this because I'm something of an insider on this game. Microsoft and the game's designer, 42 Entertainment, have briefed me on what's going to happen. Elan Lee, one of the designers at 42, told me in front of the Bellagio Fountains this week (the scene of the first major event of this game, the takeover of the fountains for a series of secret messages from the game's central character and Puzzle Master, Loki), this game is going to impress people with the scale of its events that have never been done before.

Like today's event. It's the simultaneous skywriting of messages in four cities. (Austin was supposed to be a fifth, but the cloud cover is bad there). For more information, go to www.vanishingpointgame.com. Fan sites working on the puzzle solving include http://vanishingpointwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

AP story inPittsburgh Post Gazette

Interesting quote about the purpose of the game:

Quote:
Vanishing Point was aimed at Microsoft consumers who are already sold on Vista, according to Brian Marr, the group marketing manager for Vista, the first major Windows upgrade since Windows XP launched in 2001.

"They can probably tell me things about the product," he said. Rather than touting software features, Mr. Marr said, the campaign aimed to reward the company's best customers.

Smart idea - reward your best customers as part of your launch.

And this is just funny - nice to see they have a sense of humor!

Quote:
Mr. Marr declined to reveal Loki's true identity, but said a special prize awaited the person who figured it out: his or her name, laser-etched onto a batch of microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

"Especially for that audience, the most technically engaged, having their name in lights like that is a pretty special thing," Mr. Marr said. "Even if it is very tiny little lights, underneath the fan

Week in video-game news: Microsoft and Sony battle in the desert @ Canada.com

Applicable portion wrote:
-VANISHING ACT: In 2004, Microsoft commissioned an "alternate reality game" - a contest incorporating websites, telephone calls and real-life events - called "I Love Bees" to promote the release of "Halo 2." Now Microsoft is using the same type of campaign in advance of the release of its new computer operating system, Vista.

It's called "Vanishing Point," and its website includes dozens of very difficult puzzles as well as links to cities around the world, from Los Angeles to Berlin to Singapore. First prize is a ride to suborbital space - "the ultimate vista," according to Microsoft. You can play along at vanishingpointgame.com.

Play the game @ detnews.com

::EDIT::

Thanks to colin below pointing out this is the same article as I posted above. I didn't realize it was a syndicated copy since the blurb above was a part of a larger article. Will watch that more carefully.

hiddenshadow in irc found this little promotional video about the game. It includes a brief shot of Loki's office at Microsoft. No clues, though.
