Calling London
2nd June 2006
Love Perplex City? Live in the most wonderful capital city of the world? Then pick up a copy of this month's inagural issue of The Penny, featuring a gorgeous spread of Perplex City puzzles. You can pick up The Penny for free from today at Virgin Megastores, HMV, the ICA, Foyles, Fopp, Cargo, The Social, Charing Cross Borders and Spearmint Rino.
Anyone who's London based (or London bound?) able to pick up a copy and do some scanning?

Spearmint Rhino?!?! I would have thought if you were there the last thing you would be doing is solving puzzles!

sledgecallier,
don't know if you noticed the link to
http://www.pennylondon.co.uk/index.shtml
I'll try and pick up a copy over the next couple of days - suspect someone will beat me to it and post before then.
Btw, does anyone else think Mind Candy is in desperate need of a decent proof-reader ("inagural", "Rino")? It really didn't help matters with Riemann...

I'll be able to grab a copy on Monday, perhaps earlier, although providing a decent scan may take a little while longer...

My copy arrived this morning (requested a copy from the website), so here's the scan.
I'm probably just having a typical Monday morning, but I can't yet make sense of the shop sign, or kite strings.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought the kites would be morse ...

My stab at the solutions to the various puzzles listed on the Penny page.
Plane (What is chrometophobia)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Fear of money ... a third of the hunt is not for them
Shop Sill (swapping flower pots)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you can move the pots backwards (and I don't see how you could do it otherwise), I get 19. I'm not sure if that's the best though.
R3 R2 R1 _ V1 V2 V3 -> R3 R2 R1 V1 _ V2 V3 -> R3 R2 _ V1 R1 V2 V3 ->

Left Shop Window (movies)
Right Shop Window (shows to songs)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Les Miserables = Who Am I?
Phantom of the Opera = Music Of The Night
Guys and Dolls = Luck Be A Lady
Mamma Mia = Knowing Me, Knowing You
Lion King = He Lives In You
The Producers = Springtime For Hitler
Bus Stop Sign (Number of buses that stop there)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm assuming cubes of the numbers (1^3 = 1, 2^3 = 8, 3^3 = 27, 4^3= 64, 5^3 = 125) so 6^3 = 216.
Bus Stop Sign (Wait between buses)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Doubling times means power of two. 2^(n-2) (we need to start the differences after the second bus). So, 2^(10-2) = 2^8 = 256 minutes = 4 hours, 16 minutes.
Post Stump (what is it called?) (Mail pickup times)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
12:00, 1:05, 2:10, 3:16, 4:21, 5:27, 6:32, 7:38, 8:43, 9:49, 10:54 ... I think (someone check my math)
Newspaper (Time, cost, and order of events)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
7 PM - Theatre, 20 GBP
8 PM - Speed Dating, 4 GBP
9 PM - Salsa Dancing, 12 GBP
10 PM - Live Bands, 16 GBP
11 PM - Nightclub, 8 GBP
Map on Fence (Is this bridge puzzle solveable)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I believe the answer is no because of the odd numbers of bridges connecting the internal islands.
Other things:
1. Cute hedgehog.
2. What the heck is that thing on the left side of the image that looks like a rubber chicken with its head cut off?
3. I've got nothing for the phone number, fax number, or name of shop.
4. I love Mondays when nothing is happening at work and a whole bunch of puzzles falls into my lap. Thanks buzman.

You can do it in slightly fewer
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
and without moving the pots backward. I think 16 is the fewest moves.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
2^(n-2) is the wait between the (n-1)th and the nth buses. So I get the wait after the tenth as 2^9 = 512 minutes

I totally agree
Still can't get anywhere with the shop sign. The letters are not ROT-able.

Good call. Much cleaner solution.

I'm wondering if the phone numbers are related to the code
My first thought with regards to the numbers was
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
that they represented letters in the alphabet that we had to anagram. The results are here (again, someone check my counting):
555-278-1513-1811-2021 EEE-BGH-OM-RK-YU
555-736-1317-2124-1216 EEE-GCF-MQ-UX-LP
The problem with this theory is that there are very few options with the second number and LOTS with the first number. I did note that UK shows up in the first number, so I thought it might be a website (I suppose if you consider dot to be O or OH?).
However, if the numbers are separate from the letters, why are they on the same bordered puzzle. Each puzzle is in a self-contained section of the page. The numbers are mixed in with the letters. This leads me to believe they are related. My only problem is that I'm coming up blank as to how.
An oddity I just noticed:
Almost everything on this page is focused on British things: "Upcoming British Film Festival", post stump (still looking for what you would call that), the newspaper puzzle, the spelling, all of the signage, etc.
Except the reward marker on the door to the shop reads:
Reward
$200,000
Seems sort of odd that an ad in a British paper by a British company would put the US prize denomination.
Also, anyone who has the paper, can you see if the street address of the shop is 47 (random prime number or important to something on the page?) or 42 (the latter, being a sop to Douglas Adams)? I have a feeling its the latter but I cannot tell from the scan.
Finally, does anyone know (or have a good guess) why the ad is meant to look like its taped together and drawn on? I mean the newspaper image mimics the "errors" exactly so it is obviously intentional. Or am I reading WAY too much into this page now?
No news and unsolved puzzle makes e_nygma something something.

Did anyone ever solve the Fax. and Tel. sign on the Penny article puzzle?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought that Gmumpcf Qbuxel could be along the lines of
"(G)Gee (mum)mum (pc)perplexcity (f)? (Qb)cube (u)you (xel)excel"
the 555 at the front of both the tel and fax seem like www.
If this has been solved somewhere, could you point me in the right direction. Thanks
