[NEW] Emerson CD found at Cyberia Chicago cafe!

As specified in Ethan's note, I decided to investigate the real life scavenger hunt item at the Cyberia Chicago cafe, in Chicago.

First, I e-mailed the Cyberia Chicago cafe late last night. I asked if there was an item left there for Emerson, and I received this response:

Code:
I understand that Ceven, the morning guy who?s here till 3pm Friday has it.

Nick

So this morning I drove up to Chicago and went to a little place called Cyberia Chicago. It is a very cute little hole in the wall. The storefront itself is about 20 feet wide, and covered with writing and little pictures. It has a large purple awning out front that says INTERNET CAFE.

Inside it is a tiny place, probably smaller than my apartment, with several iMacs and other computers sitting around.

At the counter there was a young man, and I asked for Ceven. He said, in a rather strange voice with a smile (either because that wasn't his name and he knew the "act" had begun, or because he was suspicious of some girl showing up asking for him by his first name), "Yes, that's me."

So I said, "I'm on a scavenger hunt type thing, and I'm supposed to come here to pick up something for Emerson."

So the guy reaches behind the counter and grabs a small (about 9x6") insulated shipping envelope. He says, "Here you go, it's yours."

On the envelope it is written "Emerson" in all caps in a black felt-tip marker. Very much like the handwriting on the note, if you ask me.

I opened the envelope right there. It was scapled shut. Inside, there was a CD in a case. On the CD is written "Emerson" again, in blue ink, in all caps.

So I asked the guy, "I guess I have to take this then?" And he said, "Yep, it's yours to keep."

I run outside, extremely happy and excited! What could be on the CD!?! Then I remembered that I wanted to interrogate the guy first, but I was so excited that I forgot.

So I went back inside, and I asked him if he knew anything about the envelope, and he shook his head no. I asked if he remembers who gave it to him, and he said, "All I know is that someone came in here last January and left it."

So I said, "Do you know what this thing is all about? I think it's a game about the Matrix." And he looked genuinely suprised and said, "Really? Neat!"

And then I left.

BrianEngima will post the files to his website, so check them out at http://netninja.com/scrapbook/Metacortex/

Most excellent, I'm very excited about what might be on that CD, can't wait for the files to be uploaded.

Said the CD came to him last January eh? That's quite a lot of setup, espescially with a compact disc, an item that could easily be lost or forgotten about.

This is all so very intriguing.

There are like 25 files, didn't have time to list them all.

They are up now, so you can check them out at that site.

Is it usual for puppet masters to this? Take ARG's into the real world...

I feel like these fellas:

*applaudes wildly* Man, that is so really cool...
(sorry, I don't have anything more insightful to contribute at the moment)
I think trip deserves a virtual pat on the back. *pat pat* Very Happy I can't wait until the end of this thing so we can find out who that guy was...if he was a PM, he probably had a great time..."Oh, a Matrix game? Heh, I had no idea, how exciting...*cough cough*" Hee!

[ok, I have something to add now - EDIT]
This is our in-game reference to Murpha. Gathered from the files:
Ryan Emerson works there, and he had an encounter with an Agent! Seriously, you guys see the ear connector thingie? I may be hallucinating, I suppose...dunno.
Also, I wonder where that house is...it obviously exists *somewhere*, it's a photo. Although it may be another stock pic.
What's the city with the skyline in the color photo of the two people?
I wonder if they forged that driver's license. Isn't that illegal? Wink

Methinks ARGs have been taken to the next level here.

I wonder if they made multiple copies of these discs...

Oh Snap!

This is some HEAVY stuff!

I'm gonna go quote happy here, bear with me:

Ok, 12.29.2001: That's quite clearly December 12th, 2001, over two years ago. These events do not look plesant. Could this be what happened to our mising woman?

A man in a suit...
Seems innocent enough, surveilance photo, obviously amateur and taken while moving.

He's plugged in...
It's either a hearing aid, or an ear-bud communications reciever. Uh oh.

This picture kinda creeps me out.
It might be our photographer in the shot, or someone who was running past the photographer. Whoever she is, she does not look happy, but very, very scared.

If that isn't an agent, I'm scooby doo.
Shades and suit all the way, plus with the shot of the plugged in gentleman, it leaves some questions. This shot looks to be of a persuit in progress, the guy definitely comes across as scanning the area while running, trying to follow someone.

Parking garage, reminds me of a few scenes from the second matrix.
Where the chase took place, I can only surmise.

I'm at a total loss. I don't know what this place is.
It's either a diner or a subway station, I can't tell which.

Certificate of Marraige
I'll quote what info I can from it:

Quote:

County of King, State of Washington.

Seventeenth day of April, 19**(hard to see)

23rd of May, 1988

At the hour of One O'Clock

Ryan Stephen Emerson of Redland Washington

Sylvia Michelle Wood(?) of Redland Washington

...presence of Dennis Shipland and Walter(Heather?) Gl*****(blurry)

23rd of May, 1988

I'm not sure of the significance of this document...

Social Security and Driver's Liscense.
Can anyone do a lookup of these SS#'s and see if its legitimate? Ryan S. Emerson, same as the marraige cert.

Quote:

Info pertaining to Ryan via Driver's Liscense
Name: Ryan S. Emerson
Age: 36 (DOB: 04-20-67)
Height: 6' 1''
Weight: 160lbs
Eyes: Blue
Liscense Issued: 06-20-96
Liscense Expires: 06-20-01
He's an organ donor too ^_~

A house, presumably Ryan's
Nice house, must've had a good income.

Why this is titled Gasworks, I do not know.
The man in this photo looks too young to be Ryan, but I might be wrong. You can see a tattoo on his right bicep as well.

Jesse
Child of Ryan's perhaps?

More Jesse

Jesse and company
Haven't seen her before.

The note.
Murpha stationary, the construction company that's building the Metacortex buildings. Writing is dated 1.17.03' which would coincide with the date the store clerk gave our info gatherer here.

(206)-350-8259 (I assume Murpha's phone number?)

Now that's a good chunk of suspiscious info.

This looks an awful lot like someone being taken over by an Agent...or at least like someone trying to make a picture look like someone being taken over by an Agent. Wink

I also have no doubt that this is supposed to be an Agent with an ear plug. Would anyone like to continue debating whether this ARG is set in the Matrix world? Very Happy

Also, one final thought - there are some definite clear serial numbers in this pic. Any ideas on what to do with them?

Well, this is what I've gotten from some of the file so far

From the license, it looks like Ryan Stephen Emerson is 6' 1" and weighs 180lbs with blue eyes. Birthdate looks to be April 20, 1967. He is an organ donor. The license expires on June 29, 2001. The license was issued on June 20, 1996. It appears that his license number is EMERS893152, but I'm not sure about that one. There is also another set of characters under the expiration date that aren't labeled: 134CQ0420.

From the certificate of marriage: Ryan Stephen Emerson married Sylvie Rochelle(?) Wood on May 23, 1988.

The President and CEO of Murpha is Robert A. Emerson. Is that Ryan's father? Brother?

[edit] On the Marriage Certificate, there is also a stamp at the top right: 604146 (or it could be 60414G)[/edit]

Good catch on the CEO of Murpha!

I'm gonna go dig around on their site, see if I can find anything.

Whoa.

First, realize that there is a "no tresspassing" photo in there. So this links the photographer to Katgirl.

Then, we have a picture of the photographer being, possibly, taken over by an agent.

I will let you draw your own conclusions.
