[INFO] List of Websites In-Game, OoG, and Meta

A show like Lost has a rampant following of fans. And with that following of fans becomes a rampant output of fansites. Unfortunately, (or fortunately), this has made it quite confusing to those who are not familiar with the detection of fansite versus in-game site. So a thread of this nature has become a necessity. Please make sure you are posting about relevant information in all the threads associated with the Lost Experience.

Also, if you think you have found a site associated with the Lost Experience, there are a couple of things you can do to be sure:

Quote:
1. Run a 'Whois'. Be aware however, that it is possible to falsify information on it. One of the more valuable indicators is the domain provider.
2. Most fansites will have a disclaimer along the lines of 'This site is not affliated with ABC...'
3. Check for fake 'Terms of Use' statements

Did I miss anything? Did I wrongly categorize a link? Please post below, all contributions are welcome!

Unless I really don't know how to do this whois thing (which is quite possible Smile), it looks like widmore.com is at least official, if not in-game.

It's the whole Chapter Zero Hosting though that makes me question it. And why is there a Burbank, CA phone number if the address is in NYC (which, btw, no one picks up at)? It is possible to provide fake registration info, especially if you want to seem legit.

In game sites

Has anyone confirmed sites? I am pretty sure that http://www.valenzettifoundation.org/ is in. There are referenced on the Hanso site and the site links to Gary Troup, which is an in game character. Now, I'm trying to figure out exactly how tricky they are. The Valenzetti site links to a bunch of sites. One is http://methusalabs.com/. This one pretty clearly seems "in". They claim to have 7 billion in funding and the "FDA approved" drug is not on the FDA website (which means it doesn't exist). It also links to http://www.forhylie.org/, which references Methusalabs. This seems in too. I'm still working through the site, but I'm wondering if others have looked at this.

It has been pretty much determined that the Valenzetti Foundation site is a fan site. As of now, I believe that the only In-game sites are www.thehansofoundation.org and (possibly) garytroup.net. The Gary Troup site is definitely sponsored by the Lost crew, but we're not sure if it ties into the game yet.

Just because a site links to an in game site, it doesn't mean that it's in game as well.

I also doubt that an in game site would link to multiple other web sites. Since ABC's target audience is new to ARGs, it wouldn't make sense for them to have such a large number of sites to pour through. For the first little while at least, there will be 2 or 3 sites to keep people busy. Any more than that, and they will lose the general public.

Slightly off-topic, but just had a little decompile of the Joop_2.swf file... There's a reference to http://www.familytrack.net/listing.html which is no-longer active, but googling around I find it used to be a part of an Alternate Reality site for a movie entitled The Punisher.

Wonder if the same company are behind that and The Lost Experience and left this in the code by mistake?

Anyhow, the page can be viewed via the WayBackMachine http://web.archive.org/web/20041107044330/http://www.familytrack.net/listing.html

Both http://methusalabs.com/ and http://www.forhylie.org/ were involoved in the Alias ARG that played last year

These are probably OOG

Since all the sites below are associated with valenzettifoundation.org and follow a trail of breadcrumbs around a fake author called SK Nave, these are probably fake:

http://globalparadigmscorp.com/~msontag/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/1TDA72A9PXIMY/102-5845767-9833751?%5Fencoding=UTF8
http://www.angelfire.com/rings/mygrandmothersbooks/
http://www.geocities.com/tru_believer2001/sknave.html
http://www.accuracyinstitute.org/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/1RKMD29HQ9CVZ/102-5845767-9833751?%5Fencoding=UTF8

But someone has a hell of a lot of time & dedication to faking us out. Also the one thing that gives me pause is the fact that the Amazon "Listmania" for SK Nave fans was created in 2004 before Lost even started. Either someone's been working on this fake set of pages for a long time or someone's able to spoof Amazon's database...

A WHOIS search for me, for some reason, isn't working for me. Can anyone check this?

The website is being hosted by Media Temple, and they offer Plesk7 as their default control panel, which comes with Horde as the default webmail if you don't turn it off.

So I'd say the above is definitely out of game and should be ignored completely.

Claims to be something to do with Dharma.

It's badly made and almost definitely out of game.

(moderator agrees, the site even says it is a fansite in fine print, adds it to the list in the top post, thanks -- catherwood)
