poems and clues now 3 years old
but standing stones remain unsolved
trail and tracks have all gone cold
and password yet to be resolved.
numbers, letters, signs and sums
how are we to "transmute with care"
6 I've taken, am I nearly done?
8 remain, am I almost there?
so once again I "test my brain"
I tell myself, I will not fail again!
countless hours I have spent
more ciphers and codes than I can recall
now far and wide my joy extends
as i declare to all, greywether FALLS!

so I think this means you solved it?
Way to go grumpyboy!!!! You have a special place of honor in the pantheon of the immortals now.
How about posting a summary for those of us who didn't follow this game?

FINALLY!!! *cough*
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
from the clues the "name" we are looking for is "STANDING STONES" but we were doing the removing of pairs wrong!
Quote:
from the name you choose, remove the pairs
of letters there identical.
if three are there, the third remains
its inclusion will be critical
STANDING STONES -> ADIGONES was incorrect. The 3 S's and 3 N's were the problem. i think we were meant to remove the first S from each word and leave the 2nd S in STONES and remove the first N from each word thus leaving the 2nd N in STANDING. doing it that way gives ADINGOES instead of ADIGONES.
The following is the part we completely missed. Key hints were:
Quote:
the names tell you which two are there
now find what they become
the plus sign has a purpose
but it's not to find a sum
and
Quote:
there's one thing that separates the numbers
on the page as the same in the name
so look for that sign
it's there by design
and it shows you which ones are the same
using this page as an example: http://www.greywethers.net/1+6.html
we knew that 1+6 is meant to show A and F (the names tell which 2 are there). what we didn't figure out was that the plus sign is meant as a tag (it shows you which ones are the same), so on the 1+6.html page the 7, 2 and 6 are tagged and 1, 3, 10 and 10 are untagged. 7, 2 & 6 gives 15 = "O" and 1, 3, 10 & 10 gives 24 = "X". doing the same for each page gives:
1+6 = A F = X O (or A=X and X=O)
10+22 = J V = Q G
14+25 = N Y = M K
16+19 = P S = T N
8+18 = H R = Z F
2+13 = B M = I C
3+4 = C D = S A
7+26 = G Z = H B
15+20 = O T = R L
5+21 = E U = U E
9+11 = I K = P D
12+17 = L Q = V J
23+24 = W X = Y W
putting it in another format:
AFJVNYPSHRBMCDGZOTEUIKLQWX
XOQGMKTNZFICSAHBRLUEPDVJYW
notice that each letter appears exactly once in the top alphabet (derived from the html page names) and exactly once in the bottom alphabet (derived from the "formulas" on the page) so we now have a keyed alphabet!
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
XISAUOHZPQDVCMRTJFNLEGYWKB
Then it's just simple substitution ADINGOES = XAPMHRUN
username: friend
password: xapmhrun
the page you end up at is not new. dave (PM) provided another way of getting there during the game. but it feels GREAT to solve this one!!!
/me takes a bow

Never a Doubt Let me echo everyone else's praise here and add that somehow, somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew I would someday see a post saying exactly that.
As far as the page it leads to being new or not, the answer to that is actually yes and no. It's true the page that's there now is the one seen in the game, because of the difficulty with this puzzle, but that was changed once the "work around" was added in. Originally, there was second part of the greywethers encryption that used the eight letters of the first part's solution - xapmhrun - in another part involving a circle of standing stones.
Perhaps that part will re-surface at some later date. In the meantime however, as soon as grumpy PMs me his mailing address, I'll be sending along to him the very first publicly available copy of the Chasing The Wish graphic novel #1 as a reward for solving this.

Thanks for the explanation grumpyboy! Now I understand why that puzzle took a few years to solve!
Great work!!

I felt compelled to walk thru the solution using my old notes, and a file which I had attached here long ago to demonstrate the steps. Here it is, updated to walk you thru each bit of tedium. The fact that the intermediate steps don't give an obvious word would make the lesser of us give up, myself included. The lesson here is to Trust the Force -- and realize that the Force is strong with this grumpyboy.
