VaporLofts now has a logo in front of the URL which is in fact a bar code.

I'm not able to read the bar code, but this bar code generator does not produce this string on either of the two alphanumeric formats which leads me to believe it's not actually reading "VAPOR". Wink

Well... I just tried analyzing the barcode with bcTester and came up with nothing. The lines don't seem to be defined enough for a good analysis.

Actually..... hold that thought...

OK... I just converted the image to monochrome and got the following results...

Code:
Analysis started
==========================================
search for linear barcodes...
-----------------------------------------------------------
search with current settings...
decreasing scandistance...
vary lightmargin...10...15...20...25...30...35...40...45...50...55...60...65...70...
-----------------------------------------------------------
search for Codablock...
-----------------------------------------------------------
search for PDF 417...
-----------------------------------------------------------
search for Datamatrix...
-----------------------------------------------------------
search for linear barcodes...
-----------------------------------------------------------
search with default settings...
decreasing scandistance...
search for light skewed barcodes...
decrease minimum barcode length...
vary lightmargin...10...15...20...25...30...35...40...45...50...55...60...65...70...
search for heavy skewed barcodes...
==========================================
barcode found!
value: 256 type: 2/5 IATA length: 3
==========================================
The analysis was ended successfully.

I don't know if this is really relevent though because it seems to have chopped the barcode into two separate ones. While the barcode may have a later purpose, I don't think this is it.

Don't know if this helps, or if the bar code is a red herring.
Since the barcode tester suggested 2 of 5, I checked out
http://www.tkb-4u.com/code/barcode/interl2of5.php and
http://www.barcodeisland.com/int2of5.phtml
Standard 2 of 5 has even white spaces.
Interleaved 2 of 5 has wide and narrow spaces.
Since this barcode has wide and narrow spaces, I tried converting to Interleaved 2 of 5. (only encodes numbers)

Apparently you decode that by converting the barcode into Wide and Narrow Bars & spaces.
The first 5 Bars should have 2 wide bars, and 3 narrow bars. The bars are going to be the 1st digit, 3rd digit, 5th digit, etc.
The first 5 spaces should also have 2 wide spaces, and 3 narrow spaces. Those will be the 2nd digit, 4th digit, etc.

I got the following at first glance:
Code:
Bars     NWNNW WNNNW NWWNN WNWNN WNNWN
           2     1     6     5     8
Spaces     WNNNW NNWNW NNWWN NNWWN NNW??
             1     4     0     0     0/4

The last digit could be either a 0 or a 4.
What I don't see is a start and end set of bars.

So if that is interleaved 2 of 5, and if there are no start/end set of bars, then it decodes to 2114605080 or 2114605084

Like I said. It could be a red herring or it could be a different barcode type. Web designers love to toss in bogus barcodes everwhere, because they look really cool.

I tried two pieces of software which scan pictures for bar codes. But both of them can't handle an *.ico file so I tried to convert it into a different format with the result that the barcode became a mess of black and white.
I assume that alphanumeric formats should be tried with this bar code and one of those programs had that option, but as I said, I can't bring it into a different format without losing all of the detail.

the barcode just says VAPOR

1. Transcribe the widths of the stripes. (Below, b=black and t=white, n=narrow and w=wide.) The difficult part with this one is inferring which gray blurs are really 3 narrow lines or just anti-aliasing.

2. Count off in sets of 9. Here is where you can confirm the widths, because every set must begin and end on a black stripe, and a wide white strip delimits the sets.

3. Go here http://www.adams1.com/pub/russadam/39code.html

4. Scroll down to Code 39 Table.

5. Look up the sequences to decode.

Code:
btbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtbtb
nwwnnnnnwwwnnnnwnnwwnnwnwnnwnwwnnnwnnwnnwnnnnnwwn
123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789

ETA: The sourcecode for VaporLoft's main page has some interesting secrets. banner1.jpg has this as its alt text:
Code:
    * Natural replicators have all or most of their design from nonhuman sources.
    * Autotrophic replicators can reproduce themselves in the wild. They mine their own materials. Usually they are designed by humans, and in particular, can easily accept specifications for human products.
    * Self-reproductive systems produce copies of themselves from industrial feedstocks such as metal bar and wire.
    * Self-assembling systems assemble copies of themselves from finished, delivered parts.

I didn't see it mentioned yet, but this quote is taken straight from the Wikipedia article on Self Replication.

I just came across gateway.html, Didn't see it mentioned in this thread. Could be for future use as there isn't much there right now. Page title is "Vapor, Inc. Team Gateway".

There's a video clip up on the journal now. There's supposedly a ghost in it. Looking now, can't see it though. Damn these eyes.

Right before she says "...and it has tons of natural lighting," looks kinda like a reflection in a pane of glass in a door. I've attached a screencap--you might have to crank up the brightness a little bit.

EDIT: Hah, there's a screencap in her directory, too!
