[UPDATE] The Sentinel - July 26 - Incidence of Twins Rising

Quote:
Incidence of Twins Rising, Study Finds
By LUCAS VOORHIES
A routine analysis of last year's births made a surprising discovery: the incidence of twin births in Perplex City has been steadily rising over the last several months, and is now nearly 8% above the baseline rate of two years ago.
The discovery was made when researchers at Ng General Hospital were preparing a baseline report of the outcomes for all births at the hospital in the preceding 12 months to determine how intrauterine medical procedures impact quality of life for the mother and child through the first year.
"At first we thought we must have hit on a statistical fluke. Then we requested data from the city's other hospitals and found the result was consistent across the whole region," said researcher Dr. Ron Jardin. "Obviously this wasn't what we were planning on studying, but we're planning to look into this right away."
Dr. Jane Oberweiss, team lead for the study, said that even when factors such as average maternal age and assisted reproductive methods are taken into account, there is still a meaningful rise in twins. "We're at a loss to explain it," Oberweiss said. "We had thought this was a fairly static value, and to see such a sharp change in a short period of time is really quite surprising."
Double the Love, an organisation that provides support and advice to new parents of multiple births, indicated that membership has risen modestly in recent years, though statistics were not readily available. "We thought it was just a successful outreach program," remarked Zachary Owens, the organisation's president.

Is an 8% increase really that high?

I found some stats relating to 1999 - of course this is just an isolated year and is based in the USA but

Quote:
MULTIPLE BIRTHS
The number of multiple births in twin deliveries continued to climb in 1999, rising 3 percent to 114,307 births. The twin birth rate (the number of twin births per 1,000 live births) was also up for 1998-99, rising 3 percent, to 28.9 per 1,000 births. Since 1980 the number of twins has risen 67 percent (from 68,339), and the twin birth rate by 53 percent (from 18.9).

This was just from a quick search on the net so very unscientific from my end

I came across a story in The Sydney Morning Herald today about twins and it made me think of The Sentinel article.

The SMH article was originally published in The Guardian on 9 July and states:

Quote:
Almost one in 150 of the British population is an identical twin. According to researchers at St Thomas's hospital, London, and elsewhere, this number is steadily increasing - although nobody yet knows why.

I wonder if it's a co-incidence.
