Maybe that is the "true" common word - the word that you get regardless of what ROT you use. Did you try skipping ahead to P, W, some random letters and see if you get vangogh again?
Edit: After a few iterations I don't find van gogh so it seems that theory is out.
Edit2: Let me take a wild guess here. sidewaysstartatthree - three iterations show van gogh. Now to figure out how to get 6 in here.

I just did it for ROT 1 to 19 ... VANGOGH appears in every ROT plane.. I think the rest of the found words are just artifacts..

EDIT: Every ROT except ROT-4 .. hmm.. I'm thinking about ROTing the rest of the layers, or maybe just wait for helper to create a tool that does it

I agree with all of you. This puzzle is diabolical. This "ROT the plane" clue just adds more frustration. Finding all these words, especially repeated words, is maddening.

In other words, its a pretty good puzzle. Somebody obviously worked very hard, putting this one together.

On the other hand, if "The Nisha Chronicles" is going to have a hint book, I hope Virgil has somebody besides Emile write it. I haven't been able to find any way to make the word "infatuation" the way Emile described it either. I thought maybe that was a clue that we had something wrong - the sheets in the wrong order, or the data garbled, or a bug in the programs I'm using. But apparently not. I checked the order of the sheets, then printed the sheets and tried to find "infatuation" by hand. I couldn't find any ordering of the sheets that would yield both "almost" and "infatuation" the way he described it. Clearly, there is something we're missing.

And I agree that we're ignoring the explicit instructions in the cube. That's because they haven't helped us yet. Looking for words and phrases directly may not solve the puzzle, but I hoped it would at least "clear the brush" on the way to a solution. It might be a waste of time - I don't know. Wordsearch puzzles are hard for me personally - I don't process visual information very well (long story) - so I wrote some code to make it easier. I apologize to anyone who has been confused by the flood of random stuff.

Attached is the code to the programs I'm using. I did delete a lot of dead code from them, but not much else. They're pretty inelegant, and completely undocumented, but maybe they are short enough to figure out. They haven't much of a user interface. Almost everything is hard coded, so I tend to run them in the debugger, modifying the code to do what I want as I go. Incidently, I write much better code for work .

ps: If you run these, you'll find one more phrase than I listed last night: "king of code":

 Code: (15, 1,15) ( 0, 1, 0): kingofcodezowqmstpgx: kingofcode

As you can see, this was on sheet 16, all letters "ROTted" by 'M'. I didn't report it last night, because the individual words are 3 or 4 characters long. I found it by hand today. I looked, I didn't see any other long phrases containing only 4-or-less-character words (but I could, as always, be wrong). In any case, the phrase "kingofcode" is now in the dict.txt, so it won't be missed again.

That was my thought, too, especially with "infat" starting correctly on sheet 7 (after six (=7?) the beginning?), as described by Emile, but then it breaks off with rubbish and doesn't end in the corner, either. Perhaps finding an ordering of the sheets that simply yields "infatuation" would be enough (if it is possible), don't worry about finding "almost" a second time, as I consider it simply a clue like "otherdirectionsexist" and thus it might perfectly well occur only one time ...
Hmmm *thinking*

I'm doing the ROT layer thing.. here's what I've got so far choosing random layers.. I only went up to ROT 19 but the pattern is obvious.. so stop at ROT 10 for the rest..

Layer 0 - VANGOGH
Layer 1 - VERMEER
Layer 2 - ELGRECO
Layer 3 - COROT
Layer 4 - NIETZSCHE
Layer 5 - RABELAIS
Layer 6 - TORMENT
Layer 7 - HIDEKO
Layer 8 - CUBISM
Layer 9 - SOPHISM
Layer 10 - CHEAT
Layer 11 - ZORRO
Layer 12 - DEMISE
Layer 13 - GRIEF
Layer 14 - BURROW
Layer 15 - DEMON
Layer 16 - FORGER
Layer 17 - DEFRAUD
Layer 18 - ARTISTRY
Layer 19 - MUDDLE

Please note that I got lazy and only looked for half of the words in 2 ROTed layers.. looked back at all the ROT's of layer 4, it seems the word nietzsche only apears in 12 of them..

Edit: Thanks to J5 and Nivra for doing ROTs

I remember from last night goofing around I found artistry on one of the layers.

Here's the cube with ROTs per Emile's suggestion for anyone who wants to play with it.

The ROT value is changeable, just change the value next to "Rot"
Interesting words are also hilighted.

Just to let you know, The ROT routine is VBS, so it will warn for macro presence.

awesome! thanks johnny5!

Say, is it possible there is no absolute solve to this?

I mean it's a wicked cool puzzle thing. but what possible solution could there be? And how will we know it when we see it?

Just got a big hint in response to a PM I sent emile;

Quote: QUOTE Emile - After you steered another forum member toward the word 'infatuation' in the cube, we've been approaching it with renewed vigor. That was very helpful information! However, we're unable to reproduce your find. Instead of 'infatuation' we come up with 'infatdation' and can't find any explanation for that u instead of the d. Did you encounter that same problem? Care to share how you were able to locate the 'u' character specifically? Continued best wishes in the development of the Nisha Chronicles. I for one am excited to see the fruits of your labors. Yeah, sorry about that, as I responded to xnbomb in a PM, I took a "shortcut" (which we know Virgil is fond of punishing), and saw the first five letters "INFAT," and skipped to the end, not realizing that I'd changed lines in the process of hopping to the end. So, the "U" is actually missing from "INFATUATION." After grepping the portions of the server I have access to, I found the URL http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/missingyou/ -- could be a connection to the "missing U" in INFATUATION, or it could be nothing...I can't really tell. Thanks again for your feedback and support...I for one can't wait to get a copy of "The Nisha Chronicles" into your hot little hands!

So it looks like the U is indeed missing from infatuation. Also, there's a link giving to vkok/infatuation. Connecting to it returns the following cunning error message.

Quote: Error 202020 Your infatuation is malformed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apache/1.3.33 Server at www.virgilkingofcode.com Port 80

I haqve been of absolutely no help what-so-ever on this so far....

Is the "Error 202020" a hint to something ROTing 20 then 20 and 20 again?

I don't think so, I think it's just a reference to the cube.. 20chars in each dimensions = 20x20x20 = 202020
