This seems to qualify as well. It's shortly after the first minute of the first episode of the AMC web-series The Trivial Pursuits of Arthur Banks. Perhaps the eyeglass hinge three-dot pattern is a case of coincidence but perhaps not.

Getting back on track to the specific tri-dot pattern I'll submit the Mercury Engineers from The Mercury Men web series that I mentioned earlier.

In NBC's The Event. while I didn't see that three-dot pattern, water was a repeating theme as was "three." There were at least three sets of rock outcroppings that seemed to me to be suggesting a trident or trishula (three again within the forks plus it linking to water). There were also three buses used to move the EBEs in a late season episode which was like in Super 8 to move the townsfolk. In addition in The Event an equilateral triangle was used as the logo of the serum used on the children. The higher middle tong of a trident or trishula could also perhaps be thought of as triangular. Three might be thought of as "past, present, and future."

The three dots from SUPER 8.
Bowling balls.
Remember, you didn't hear this from me! This post will self-destruct in five seconds . . .
Not only is there that hole pattern in bowling balls but the pattern of the ten pins (looking down) forms a tetraktys which can be thought of as a fractal-like collection of these equilateral triangular dot patterns. This might then be connected to a film such as The Big Lebowski or to Fringe (already mentioned with the LED flashlights) as Sam Weiss is where?- in a bowling alley. Considering The Big Lebowski and Fringe, this is quite Zen-like perhaps.
The Celtic Triquetra knot might be thought of as a cousin and the three dot pattern perhaps as a simple way of abstracting it.
Keeping on the equilateral triangle form that the three-dot pattern suggests I'll point out that the five Platonic Solids can be thought of as having equilateral triangles at their foundations. The simplest and historically most important one to the Greeks is the tetrahedron.
I can't help but also mention Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes and the "Bucky Ball" of Carbon 60 (nanotechnology).
I've seen this pattern as being seeded along with other clues in network and cable television series as well as in sci-fi and fantasy films over the past few years as part of a larger effort of the entertainment industry to suggest a range of scenarios that have apocalypse and aliens and 2012 as "conspiracy" elements.
I'll also suggest a tie-in between this very three circle pattern and the apocalypse theme by offering how the Martians eyes looked in the classic 1953 George Pal War of the Worlds film. Everything regarding the Martians was in threes- from the eyes to the tripods (shown as beam-legs in the 1953 film) to the pattern of the ships being three per "meteor" and the meteors being in threes.
In a bit of degrees of separation but perhaps as clue trails I'll offer what I consider as a link between H.G. Wells classic story and Super 8, which started this thread. Think back to those semi rigs and you'll notice that there were not only the three-dot triangles on the trailers but THREE of the trailers. Dakota Fanning was in the 2005 remake of WotW along with Tom Cruise and was about the same age (10-11) then as her sister Elle was for Super 8. Spielberg is connected of course to the 2005 WotW and to Super 8 and used the younger Fanning sister to perhaps suggest the previous film. The mouth of the creature (mentioned online as "Aqua") is triangular.
Aqua of course means water and the water tower is a central part of the Super 8 story arc. In the aftermath of the 1938 radio play by Orson Wells are stories such as residents of Grover's Mill firing on the local water tower, mistaking it for a Martian tripod. The water tower is made use of as a launching platform in the Super 8 film. Perhaps we are left with the idea that "Aqua" is a scout for a future invasion.
Oh, besides the three tractor-trailers in Super 8 there were three buses used to transport the town's population. I can't remember if the military trucks were numbered as three but the buses certainly were.
In the really entertaining new web-series called The Mercury Men (www.mercuryseries.com) the invading "engineer" suits show the men from Mercury to have three eyes, hinting at the pineal gland in humans perhaps. Even though the invaders are not from Mars there is of course the coincidental link that the Orson Wells production was called Mercury Theater on the air and uses connections to the Mercury seven astronauts.

I'm bumping this only to toss a bone at something that was mentioned awhile back but no one really said anything about the post Ryuu made...instead of linking here's what he said...
The three dots in a triangle are also used widely in the southeast region of Turkey as a symbol of being one of the tribesman. The three dot symbol is known as "Gormem,Duymam,Soylemem" meansing that "I hear nothing, I see nothing and I tell nothing". Carrying this symbol is a promise to the society the person belongs into, and requires great responsibility such as being willing to sacrifice himself in favor of the society.
I hear nothing, I see nothing and I tell nothing sounds so close to a secret government/military agency type motto.
and then
Carrying this symbol is a promise to the society the person belongs into, and requires great responsibility such as being willing to sacrifice himself in favor of the society.
Sounds like military to me, change a few "society" to "country" and you have a match..

Yes, but JJ could have selected that particular watch for a reason
I was really just having some fun with that post, but it makes me thnk how many more occurrences there may be, coincidental or not.

It maybe coincidence, but looks plausible.
Actually the 'dots' you refer to on the watch are simply chronograph 'dial' displays which are quite common in sport and high-end watch styles (see one of many examples via Amazon item listing).
No conspiracy there, even if J.J. did work on the script — he didn't invent watch designs around the world at the same time.

Cool, but I wonder what the A, J, and J in the dots stand for?
Yet another mystery...
